Wimberley Weekend – The Queen’s Chronicles
This weekend there was a cold front I wasn’t expecting which really put a damper on my plans to be productive! Instead we had a little baseball, a date night and lots of laying around napping! I thought it would be more fun to take you back to our Wimberley Weekend we enjoyed with our besties!
If you do not know already, my friend Holly and I traded in birthday parties for experiences beginning with the girls 10th birthdays. We have had fun in Fort Worth, laid by the pool in San Antonio, been to Paris by way of Dallas, floated the lazy river in The Woodlands, seen Houston in color and had so much fun on our Swiftie weekend! They are so looking forward to NYC for their 16th and Vegas on their 21st!
So why Wimberley? Why not?! Holden loves art and Wimberley is a quaint little town in the hill country just outside of Austin with lots of charm and just enough to keep these two occupied. Plus we love supporting communities and seeing them come together. In 2015 Wimberley suffered a devastating flood and it was so amazing to see it has recovered. You can read more here.
One of our favorite parts of our roadtrips are the fun itineraries Holly pulls together which include not only lots of fun things to do but also interesting tidbits about where we are going! And how cute are these drawstring totes she snagged from Shutterfly?
All great roadtrips include a stop at Buc-ees! Seriously there is nothing you can’t find at this store.
I’ve already shared we made a quick pit stop in Austin to take a little ATX mural tour along South Congress. We just can’t help ourselves when we are so close!
We initially found a tiny house (the girls are obsessed) but we didn’t jump on it quick enough. Instead we ended up at Cabins on the Square. We should have taken an after picture because holy tornado! This quaint little room gave us walking access to town and offered a tranquil creek running behind but it was definitely close quarters for 4 women trying to get dressed each day!
We stopped at the Sugar Shack Bakery for a little “breakfast”. If nothing else we sugared the girls up so they had plenty of energy for a little hiking!
First stop, Jacob’s Well. It was a short hike to the actual well where the trees open up to this scene.
You can see the dark spot in the picture above which is the actual well. In warmer months the park will be full of swimmers jumping off a rock into the well. I was so shocked by the size as I’ve seen pictures of this place for years and always thought it was much larger. Typically during the warmer months there is a fee to visit the park but we were super excited to find it was free on our visit!
We couldn’t help but take a picture of these signs at a “T” in the road! How fun is this? Definitely something you only see in a small town.
We then headed over to hike the 218 steps up Lookout Mountain, also referred to as “Old Baldy” which provided a 360 view of the Texas Hill Country.
Back to town and a chance to explore all the shops in Wimberley. We loved searching for the boots along the way too. BOOTiful Wimberley is an art display of 50 boots decorated by local artists.
We loved the queso at Ino’z Brew & Chew so much we ate here both Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The burgers and sweet potato fries were also a win! Live music is another perk and we enjoyed listening on arrival Friday night.
The girls loved hanging by the creek teaching themselves to skip rocks! I was battling allergies and did not feel great this day. When we decided to call it a day and hunker down watching murder mystery shows I was not sad.
Sunday morning we freshened ourselves up a bit and explored town a bit more before packing up.
We found Vittles and some healthy smoothies which definitely helped our mood. The owners of all the businesses in Wimberley are ready to chat and tell you about their things and hear about where you are from.
We headed to Wimberley Glassworks and this became our favorite stop on the trip! It is a MUST if you visit Wimberley. The art is just gorgeous but sitting through a couple of demos (you can find video here). The owner took so much time talking to the girls and answering questions. If you are in the Austin/San Antonio area this is such a good excuse for a day trip!
We stopped by The Shady Llama on our way out of town and really, really wish we had made a drive out the day before! This location is another not to be missed if you head to Wimberley. Hammocks, seating, corn hole and a bar with food trucks with a beautiful view was definitely a perfect place to relax and enjoy an afternoon. Sadly, there were zero llamas hanging around in the short time we stopped but it will definitely be on my list if I return.
Our next stop was not directly on our route home but holy yum. If you are ever near Dripping Springs you definitely want to stop at the Hays City Store! The food was all amazing, the beer was cold and the live music was perfect for a beautiful spring day. Plenty of outdoor seating with a great family atmosphere.
We were heading for one last adventure on our way back home but had a little mom fail as neither Holly or I really thought Hamilton Pool Preserve would be busy on a Sunday in March. Well, we were wrong and there were zero reservations left. It is a spot I’ve always wanted to visit so I’ll keep it on my Hill Country bucket list!
I spotted this field of wildflowers as we headed out on Friday and knew it would be a perfect ending for our road trip. This patch was found off highway 21 near Bastrop on the site of the Lost Pines Nursery. It’s been forever since I have happened upon a field so full of colorful wildflowers mixed with our treasured bluebonnets.
Another birthday, another roadtrip completed! These memories are bigger than any gift we could give these girls and I’m so thankful for our time together. Time to start planning our next adventure!
