Weekending in Corpus Christi – Stay & Play
We spent last weekend visiting Corpus Christi, Texas and while we were primarily there to see my fave minor league player, we took in some new to us sites. Carly Jo made a list weeks in advance of fun things to do in Corpus and we knocked out quite a few. Come along and see where we stayed & played!
Corpus Christi has several areas and in the past we have either stayed closer to the beach in a VRBO rental or stayed minutes from Whataburger Field on the bay boardwalk. This time we decided to try staying in an area closer to the mall and other dining establishments which would be nearer to Riley’s home base. I chose the Aloft and so far, I have yet to be disappointed in this brand regardless of the location.
Brunch is my favorite and Riley took us to his favorite breakfast joint, Hesters Cafe. This avocado toast was amazing! I ordered the queso on the side because I was a skeptic but wholy moly….delish on this dish!
It was snapback day for #momsrockmaystyle so we had a little mom and son snapback style working! Love this crazy bearded boy!
First up on our list was to visit the USS Lexington. I’ve toured a ship before but this one was probably twice as big. My Fitbit said we walked 12 flights of stairs on our tour. Carly has really been into history lately so it was a fun venture.
On the way back to the car we saw soft serve ice cream and nothing is better on a hot day! Well before I could even snap this picture Carly dumped the entire top of the cone off on the ground. Thankfully they were super sweet and refilled the cone. I grabbed the chocolate which is usually my very favorite but I was not a fan and ended up dumping mine because it was totally not worth the calories!
This sweet girl is growing so fast! She has the most adventurous spirit and is just growing so fast…like seriously an inch this past month. Sometimes she gets just a little sassy but all and all she’s definitely a keeper.
Next on her list was the Texas Surf Museum. Who knew this could actually be interesting! They actually have Pat McGee’s collection so that was pretty fun to look at. I had no idea there was any decent surfing in Texas but evidently the further south you get the better it is!
Somehow I managed to not grab any pictures but we also visited the Treehouse Art Collective which is full of local artist work. We even found a mother’s day gift for Keith’s mom.
We were starved but didn’t want to eat too much so late since we knew we would end up eating dinner late with Riley. We grabbed these nachos at the Executive Surf Club which is also in the Water Street Market area.
All over downtown they have the boxes painted by local artists. We thought this one was too cute to pass up.
We were so excited to find this mural which is new since we visited last. Isn’t it beautiful? It’s located on the north facing wall of Richline Technical Service headquarters building at 114 N Mesquite St. If you aren’t familiar with Corpus and want to know who the woman is, it is Selena.
A quick change and we were off for our second night of Hooks baseball and seeing our favorite minor leaguer.
The hardest part of being the mom of a reliever is you never have a clue really when he might pitch. We could see 3 games and never see him come in and I knew it was highly likely we would not see him at all this weekend but I also could tell he was just a little homesick for his mom. 🙂
This picture stinks but trust me, the sushi at Water Street Oyster Bar was top notch. Riley’s roll had fried oysters on top!!
Time to pack up before knocking out a few more murals on Sunday. Carly Jo is such a great little travel buddy!
My friend Holly has taught us well how to seek out different points of interest when we travel and this ice cream cone house was definitely interesting. The owners repaint it at different times during the year for different occasions. So funny.
Let’s just say getting this picture is harder than it looks!
We had some additional murals on our list which were at the Art Center of Corpus Christi but we had no idea how much fun touring the art inside would be. Look at these gowns from the 2018 Las Donas De La Corte Coronation. Aren’t they amazing?
On the outside are these colorful murals in each of the arches on the building. Colorful and fun and each with a slightly different theme.
Of course any theme which includes tacos you can count me in!
See this not-so-little creature swimming across the wall of the Braswell Office Systems building and across the street from The Exhange on William Street.
We saw this mural on our visit last year and it is so fun but the stairs make it really hard to photograph. See it at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times on Taylor Street
On our way to the ballpark we drove right past this fence next to a local flower shop and quickly turned around! We couldn’t pass up one more chance for a few pictures.
And one more chance to hug this kids neck! I was right and we didn’t get to see him play but it was a beautiful weekend for baseball.
And of course you have to take a picture with Sammy the seagull!
And of course our second most favorite part about Whataburger Field is of course, Whataburgers!
It was a really long and late drive home but our 48 hours in Corpus made my Mother’s Day weekend super sweet.
