Tropical Halter – Pattern Mixing Basics

Do you love a great, bold pattern?  This time of year especially I find myself reaching for beautiful florals and bold, colorful stripes.  Bold patterns can dress up an outfit or make the every day denim shorts 100% more fun!  The trick, really, is finding a pattern with a base color which works well for you in a style that is flattering.  This tropical halter top fit every single one of those marks for me!

One thing I was once super cautious about was pattern mixing.  Maybe I wouldn’t even say cautious as much as out right against it because never once had the thought crossed my mind to combine a stripe with a floral or pop in an animal print.  If you are like me and are slightly afraid of pattern mixing, here are a few tips which helped me overcome pattern mixing anxiety!

  • Start small by adding a pop of pattern with a clutch, shoes or a small accessory such as a bracelet.
  • Pick one pattern as the focal point and build the other patterns around it.  With this look the floral is so bold so adding a skinny stripe and leopard shoes at a distance was an easy mix.
  • Balance the patterns.  If you have narrow stripes, pick a larger, bolder pattern.  Have a bold animal print?  Mix with a small floral touch or tiny stripes.
  • Biggest tip we have all heard so many times by now, leopard really is a neutral so use it as such.

I have truly fallen in love with a great pattern mix and I’m loving how this look came together.  When paired well the patterns seem to flow seamlessly and look like they belong together right?

I learned so much about pattern mixing from Cassie so it’s no wonder I am in love with how well this new halter top works with other patterns.  The first day it was available I tried to order in a regular medium and it was already sold out in this pattern.  Since I’m short waisted I decided to take a chance and order the petite medium and I’m so thrilled I did!  This top will be so fun with shorts, dressed up for date night or even worn with a skirt for work.  It’s a flowy cut but I’ve also shown it here with a side knot which will change the look up just a tad.

So how about you?  Do you like to try your hand with bold prints and a little pattern mixing?
