Katy and I are super excited you are here for our first Spiel the Beans with the Queens linkup! We hope you will find the prompts fun! You can find all the future dates here.
Today we are talking about the best (or worst) Mother’s Day gifts you have ever given or received. As mom’s we of course cherish every little handprint made into artwork and of course we love receiving household appliances right? Well here are a few of my favorites over the years.
Acceptance…..
So when you are 20 years old and not married and you have to tell your dad you are pregnant it is not the easiest thing to do. I was his baby girl and I know this was not really the path he wanted for me. A few weeks later when this card came in the mail it was such a huge deal…a really huge deal. My dad accepted that my choices didn’t change the fact that he loved me! This was the best 1st Mother’s Day card ever.
Unconditional Love….
And my mom the same year…wow! I love that I still have these cards. Having my parents stand behind me and show me such love during this time in my life made all the difference in me being able to become a mom at 21.
Reassurance….
I have countless cards from my own mom on Mother’s Day every year always with kind words about my mothering. I have some sweet, sweet friends who are thoughtful and send sweet words this time of year too and it is always so heartwarming and reassuring to know even when we screw up we are still good moms. If you have a chance send a note to a mom you know and I promise you will not regret it!
Flowers….
Flowers are always a favorite gift of mine but in 2007 I received some that were extra special. Jordan had her first job and she used her very own money to stop and buy me yellow roses and I will never forget how beautiful they were or how beautiful she looked when she gave them to me!
Jewelry…..
Here’s the deal about jewelry, unless you absolutely 100% know that it is something I want it is not worth spending alot of money. Keith bought me the heart locket one Mother’s Day and I do love it. He took Carly and Dillon to pick something out for me in recent years and they came home originally with a Brighton bracelet holding these charms. It wasn’t that it was not beautiful but y’all…I hated it. Of course it was purchased locally at a boutique and there was no exchanging so I ended up spending more to add the charms to a chain. It is just so not me and I rarely wear this which makes me sad when I know how much it costs and remember how super excited Carly Jo was to give it to me. #ihavenopokerface Hmm…maybe I’ll wear it this year for Mother’s Day.
A New Bible….
My bible was from my confirmation when I was 12 and it was falling all apart (sadly from age and not overuse). I had begun really trying to be more intentional with bible reading and asked for a new bible and Jordan heard me! It was a sweet treasure to receive for Mother’s Day.
Art Work of Course….
I’d lie if I said that artwork wasn’t one of my favorites! I just love looking back at all the work from over the years. Thankfully Mother’s Day is near the end of school so when your child writes about you liking to watch TV and “jing” wine you don’t have to hide every time you pass the teacher.
This just cracks me up every..single…time. I really love that one of his dislikes was the TAKS test. Ha! He apparently was very sure of his athletic ability even at 8 as there is more you can’t read that is hilarious.
Especially sweet to go back and read right now when he is 14 and doesn’t always think I make his life so sweet!
A poem will always earn a special place in my heart for sure!
Adult Child Humor….
So it really is true that my Bigs and Littles are really being raised somewhat differently. Will my Littles grow up to know all my little secrets too? It is a true gift to be able to share humor with your adult children.
Baseball….
Really you say? Baseball a gift? Well if I didn’t consider it a gift I would probably be sorely disappointed because more Mother’s Day weekends than not in the past 10 years have been spent at a ball field or with at least one of my boys gone for a tourney. At TCU they always honored the moms on Mother’s Day weekend and let us throw out the first pitch to our sons. Loved this so much!
Makeovers….
Every mom loves a great makeover right? For real I do and a facial is exactly what I have asked for this year but here is a great memory I have of probably the most loving makeover I’ve ever had. When Dillon was in kinder they had Mommy Makeovers for Mother’s day and those of us in attendance brought our supplies and let the kids fix us up. Y’all, you think girls get into makeovers? These little boys were all about it. They were filing my nails, fixing my hair and putting makeup on me. So precious!
I ‘d really fail if I didn’t mention here that as my kids have grown and fled the coop what I really love most for Mother’s Day is the gift of time. Time for us to be together as a family, time out of their busy lives to just sit back and remember that, hey, without me we wouldn’t all be here right? Ha!

This is lovely. My very favourites have to be the notes from your parents! What wonderful sentiments
Ugh I forget this again!!!!!!!!
So much fun. I love that you still have those notes and cards. I like to hold onto stuff like that too. You should totally wear the necklace this year… even if just for a little while.
Awesome post! More later about that adult humor with your older kids.
The hashtag ihavenopokerface made me laugh. I don't either, and it made me think of a recent gift. Michael gave me a little stuffed animal donkey because I am always saying how it would be fun to live in the country and have a donkey. Well, unfortunately the little stuffed animal was packaged in a small Tiffany blue box. I was thinking jewelry and got a little donkey. My face said it all, and I don't think Michael will ever let me forget it. I just did my Media Monday post, but plan to get one up about Mother's day later today. Loved seeing all your old cards and notes. How do you keep up with all that?
Love this sweet walk down your motherhood memory lane! And I super love that the moms got the throw the first pitch! So fun!
I have never gotten a birthstone momentum for Mother's Day! Can you believe that? Maybe this year will be the first? Great memories, Shelly! Thank you for sharing!
The art work is the cutest! It's the most special gift and I know my Mom still has all of ours too!

Awww…this made me tear up! Such a precious post. And those cards and letters from your parents!!! All parents say they love their child unconditionally, but proving it during a rough time says it all. Kuddos to them.
I love this post and love all of the ideas for Mothers Day that you shared! My favorite is definitely a card and flowers (so cliche) but I love it!
I also blogged about 10 things this Tuesday https://sheridanjohnson.com/2016/05/03/10-things-i-dislike/
please head on over for a visit! 🙂
Awww, that is so sweet of your parents to give you those cards when you were so young and afraid. Artwork is the cutest. Do you keep it all? I've been taking pictures and only keep super special ones, because in the end, they don't want it when they grow up…so it really is just for me.
You received so many memorable gifts. I love the makeover idea! How precious that must have been. And the love letters from your parents – priceless! Is this linkup taking place of your Queen Bee one?
I agree, my little kids are being raised by a completely different mom than my oldest child. It's definitely fun to have that bond with my oldest though. I jokingly refer to her as my rough draft child, which is how I got the name for my blog. I learned a lot from having her at 20.
Oh my goodness Emily I LOVE that rough draft child is what you call her and that it gave you inspiration for your blog name. That is just a precious story. Isn't it crazy looking back to know how much we have grown? I just love the relationship I have with Bigs. Hope you have an amazing Mother's Day!
Thanks Michelle. Yes, unfortunately we just didn't feel we could keep the Queen Bees going. We are so grateful to you for being so supportive for almost the entire year!!
Oh no girl….I do NOT keep it all. Everyone at my house gets one box for artwork…including me!! I actually have mainly kept the ones specific to Mother's Day and a lot of times with my kids if they have a hard time letting go we just take a picture of them holding their artwork!
So true Lauren! I was very fortunate to have my family standing with me through so many trials in life. Their unconditional love was never something I questioned . Hope you are having a super week!
I just love looking back at it all Shauna! Hope you are having a super week!
I actually have had several….and it's kind of crazy because I'm still just anal enough that the colors don't quite match up and it's not my favorite. 🙂 Hope you will get to see your girls for Mother's Day!
Girl! It really is something I struggle with. The donkey story is hilarious….men just crack me up sometimes.
Oh girl…lots of political incorrectness with those two!
Great post, Shelly! My #1 is a TCU grad so I have a lot of purple in my wardrobe. Beautiful letters from your Mom.
I know Beth….I really need to wear it more. Carly Jo's face lights up every time I do. In fact I might just find a way to wear it today. 🙂
Kimm!! Am I going to have to get you on speed dial!! 🙂
I really do love that I still have them Sarita, especially since my dad is no longer here. Hope you are having a great week!
Me again – I decided to add this week's Tuesday Talk because it features many great Mother's Day Ideas from around blogland (including yours) and my thought on my Mother's Day gift. Feel free to delete if you don't feel it meshes with the theme.
Thanks! I will see Taylor for dinner on Saturday night, in her college town. Kelsey I won't see until Taylor's graduation on May 20. I am over at the beach now, and she lives close by but is so busy working and being a new wife. Sadly mama takes a backseat. Oh well. Tony will spoil me no doubt! We are golfing on Mothers Day. He said he is a lucky man! LOL
Oh Shelly I love this – and I am with you 1000000% on jewelry! I have some pieces that are sweet but girl, never will I wear them! Time, yes, time.
Shelly – what a beautiful post and what beautiful parents you have. Such love. I was the mom – my daughter got pregnant at 22 and then again at 27. But she is the most wonderful mom in the world and her children are the most wonderful gifts we ever received. Someone very wise told me the first time that this pregnancy might not have been my plan, but this precious life was no surprise to God. Thanking Him every day that his plans are better than mine!
Unplanned but not unwanted…..I remember reading that once and it was so true! Plus God knew these babies were just what I needed!! Hope you have a beautiful Mother's Day!!
Michelle…you my friend have my full permission to post ANY content anytime!! Hope you have a super Mother's Day!!
Thanks Katie! It worked out so perfectly for us because my two little kids will go to a high school with purple as the school colors too!! Hope you have a sweet Mother's Day!
Oh my goodness! Those letters! What treasures to have! Thanks for sharing at Waiting on…Wednesday! Looking forward to your Summer Bucket List link-up next week! 🙂
