A little late to the party, but today I’m joining Andrea at
Momfessionals for Show & Tell Tuesday! I saw a few high school friends this past weekend which brought back some fun memories so I could not pass this one by.
I grew up in a small town (about 10,000 people when I graduated) so I knew most of the people I went to high school with both above and below my class. I graduated with about 146 others. Let’s take a quick look down memory lane!
Just like now, I kept everything that might have been memorable to me! Evidently my freshman year was not and that id was nowhere to be found. Let’s say I was the queen of trying out new hairstyles during high school. Not sure I ever quite got it figured out! I also was totally lost in trying to figure out who I was and was constantly changing the spelling of my first name. In a small town no one even questioned it and just let me do whatever I wanted.
I played volleyball all four years and basketball the first two years. Don’t be jealous of our polyester uniforms! Volleyball was definitely my favorite but if I’m being honest I could have been a decent basketball player had I wanted to put forth some work. Once I could no longer just stand post up and let them feed me the ball it was all downhill. Plus our basketball coach required us to run track and, well, I really sucked at that!
Being part of a team was so much fun! There were definitely some good times on bus trips with lots of singing and practical jokes. When I see this picture I can almost see the big boombox and hear Prince playing in the background! Maybe I even smell a Big Mac. I loved all these girls!
My junior and senior year our football team rocked! We went to the playoffs both years and there was no place to be on Friday night but at the game. My senior year I was one of the homecoming queen nominees and my little brother was a freshman and escorted me. For those of you unfamiliar, we would wear mums (the bigger the better) for homecoming. We actually wore those suckers too. The first year Jordan went to homecoming they took pictures and then threw them aside and I was appalled!
I absolutely was always trying to dress with the times then too! Coca Cola shirts were a really big deal and I totally remember how excited I was when my mom finally shelled out the dinero. OP swimsuits were a must. Some other fads I participated in….jams shorts, Madonna hair ties and rubber bracelets, bubble skirts, huge earrings and of course big hair. I would have probably sold my soul for some Guess jeans too but my mom was not impressed with the price tag.
I loved being part of spirit committee but I’m pretty sure no one was cheering for my hair! I mean really? It’s a right angle!!!
These girls were two of my very faves and we had some serious laughs together. We had a powder puff football game every year; junior girls against senior girls. So much fun!
And this girl shares a birthday with me even though she will always be a year older! We definitely helped each other through some drama, could talk for hours on end and put hundreds of miles on our cars cruising through town.
My momma was crazy (or I just completely wore her down) and I rarely dated guys that were actually in high school. Yes, in a small town the guys WILL actually come back to prom after they are in college!! Both my junior and senior prom I attended with guys I was dating who had already graduated. I seriously loved this dress though. I remember finding it in Seventeen magazine and dragging my neighbor and one of my best guy friends with me to Houston to search for it. I could not believe when I found it. Size 5…5 y’all and I always thought I was fat!!
The only guy I actually dated who was in my class was actually one of my very best friends since the 2nd grade. We totally had to go take a picture in front of the “eternal flame” on our town square one night..haha. This guy is still one of my favorite people ever and thank goodness we realized we were better off as friends! True story, Keith and I ran into his mom at a wedding recently and she says to Keith “I was almost her mother-in-law”.
Please note, my long term plan was to graduate from the University of Texas and I had the hook ’em mastered if I do say so myself. My friend was a total Aggie. Funny how life changes….we both ended up with degrees from Sam Houston State! Ha!
My senior picture…..the hair again. I seriously cannot imagine how my life would have been different had there been a flat iron in my arsenal of hair tools! I was also the queen of dying my hair myself and I’m pretty sure this may not have been my natural hair color!
And drumroll please…I saved the best for last! Maybe this is why I always had boyfriends who were no longer in school with me!!
Yep, that’s right folks. My high school claim to fame was being voted biggest flirt! What?!!
On a sad note, my flirting partner in crime was killed in a car accident in 1993. He was such a handsome dude and such a sweet talker. Definitely a life cut short way too soon.
I really do not regret growing up in a small town. My kids definitely have so many more opportunities in regard to education today but I feel like we were so much closer. Everyone supported all events at the school and we genuinely cared for each other which was possible since the school was so small.
So there you go….that’s a little bit of who I was in high school!

I wish o had been more organized this summer with blogging. This was such a fun link up!!!
I have seriously had some weeks with there has been absolutely no way to pull something together. I have got to get organized and get on a regular schedule. I think I need to set some specific posting days and set aside a limited amount of time for looking at other blogs. I can get carried away so fast and next thing I know 4 hours have passed!
One word. Well, maybe three. Oooooohhhhh em geeeee!! Loved this post!
I enjoyed looking at your pictures! Definitely my generation! Haha! The bigger the bangs the better!
We kept Aquanet in business for sure!
I can't even believe you still have all the pictures. I wouldn't even know where mine are, plus I had a graduating class of over 500 students and absolutely hated school and couldn't wait to be outta there. So there is a lot to be said for small town schools. My husband came from one too and he loved his high school years. The hair, love it! You were even Miss. Fashionista back then Shelly.
OH I love this! Somehow I missed it the other day. Look at you being all organized and having all of that stuff. I was digging around like crazy trying to find photos.
