Short Love Story + Ageless Style Linkup

·

Happy 4th of July everyone!  I hope you are all out spending the day with family and friends and celebrating this freedom we enjoy and remembering it doesn’t come free.

It’s also the first Tuesday of the month and time to share a little Ageless Style!  This month Jennie chose to showcase shorts and show off how women over 40 can still rock a pair.  Be sure to share your favorite look and follow along with all the looks today. Here is my short love story!

Even though showing off my legs is not quite the highlight it was in my younger days, I still cannot imagine passing on shorts in the heat of a Texas summer.  For me it is all about finding the right length.  Once I became a mom, I grabbed longer shorts for years before finally realizing they did not flatter my legs.  Too short and, well, nobody wants to see that.  Finding a pair to hit in just the right spot to make my legs appear longer and flatters their size a bit more was key.  The perfect length for me appears to be 4-5″ depending on the style.

City Shorts

I was on the lookout for a black pair to dress up a little for date nights and was thrilled to find this pair of city shorts on sale.  My other tips for making the legs look more flattering in shorts?  Wearing with a wedge sandal or heels and definitely adding some self tanner.  I used Rodan + Fields foamless sunless tanner 20 minutes before we left for dinner and love the color it added.

Cold Shoulder Tie Waist Blouse

Typically I would not try a top with the waist accentuated but the color and style drew me in.  The fact it was 50% off may have also helped!  Regardless I am so thrilled I gave it a shot because the outfit came together seamlessly.

Boho Fringe Clutch

This clutch has been such a hit from Stella & Dot it has been on backorder forever.  I ordered in March and it finally arrived last week!  The colors were even more fabulous in person!

When you pick an outfit that is both comfortable and flattering to your shape, you can be yourself which always makes for a much better date night!  Of course I can’t help but smile when Keith is playing the role of photographer.

  1. This is such a super flattering outfit Shelly! I especially love the blouse and clutch! I don’t like to accentuate my waist either but this top looks terrific on you and it’s on super sale. Regretting a self imposed shopping ban until I drop a few vacation pounds right about now! Happy 4th friend!

    1. Girl….I need to impose a shopping ban! I have at least returned more than I have kept but there have been some great sales. I’m at a real crossroads right now with my weight and it has been such a struggle just to stay the same much less drop a few pounds! Hope you have a great 4th!

  2. So cute! I think 5″ shorts are appropriate for all women. The trend of teeny tiny shorts needs to fade out soon. That top is so unexpected but totally works and the color is fab! Have an amazing 4th!

  3. This month’s theme of shorts that Jennie picked couldn’t be better for July. Love your shorts and top. You are a walking Ann Taylor add. They are both such a steal so I might have to grab them. Also that colorful clutch is awesome, I can see why it was sold out!

    Happy 4th of July Shelly!

  4. Seriously love this pink and black look! Black shorts are so fun to dress up and down. That boho clutch is Amazing – I can see why it is on such back order. 4 – 5″ shorts work best for me, too. I did the exact same thing with wearing longer shorts or capris once the boys were born. Now I am kicking myself for not showing off those legs while I had the chance! Happy 4th, Shelly!

    1. We went to Disneyland about 6 years ago and I was actually thinner than I am now but when I saw the pictures of me in my long “walking” shorts I was like, oh my, something has got to change! haha I may be mom but I don’t have to dress like one right?

  5. I was just thinking to myself, “I wonder who her photographer is!” Great job on the pics, Keith! And, this outfit looks fabulous on you!

  6. So agree about finding the shorts that flatter your legs the best. Long short down to my knees do nothing for my legs either. Love the pink top. And yes, women over 40 can stick look fabulous.
