January Book Review – Between the Lines

January is typically one of our “free” months each year when the calendar is free of weekend commitments. While I have logged a little reading, the weekends have been spent trying to be a little productive around the house. I did manage to settle down enough to make it through two new books which I’m sharing in this January book review.

The Last Anniversary

Amazon: Sophie Honeywell always wondered if Thomas Gordon was the one who got away. He was the perfect boyfriend, but on the day he was going to propose, she broke his heart. A year later he married his travel agent, while Sophie has been mortifyingly single ever since. Now Thomas is back in her life because Sophie has unexpectedly inherited his aunt Connie’s house on Scribbly Gum Island—home of the famously unsolved Munro Baby mystery.

Sophie moves onto the island and begins a new life as part of an unconventional family, where it seems everyone has a secret. Grace, a beautiful young mother, is feverishly planning a shocking escape from her perfect life. Margie, a frumpy housewife, has made a pact with a stranger, while dreamy Aunt Rose wonders if maybe it’s about time she started making her own decisions.

As Sophie’s life becomes increasingly complicated, she discovers that sometimes you have to stop waiting around—and come up with your own fairy-tale ending.

My Thoughts: I picked up The Last Anniversary i with Kindle Unlimited after Christmas for $2.99. I loved The Husbands Secret and What Alice Forgot by the same author and figured it was worth a shot for the price.

It was entertaining enough and an easy read but I would not necessarily classify this one as a page turner. I’d probably give it about 3 stars.

A Curve in the Road

Amazon: Abbie MacIntyre is living the dream in the picturesque Nova Scotia town she calls home. She is a successful surgeon, is married to a handsome cardiologist, and has a model teenage son who is only months away from going off to college.

But then one fateful night, everything changes. When a drunk driver hits her car, Abbie is rushed to the hospital. She survives, but the accident forces unimaginable secrets out into the open and plagues Abbie with nightmares so vivid that she starts to question her grip on reality. Her perfect life begins to crack, and those cracks threaten to shatter her world completely.

The search for answers will test her strength in every way—as a wife, a career woman, and a mother—but it may also open the door for Abbie to move forward, beyond anger and heartbreak, to find out what she is truly made of. In learning to heal and trust again, she may just find new hope in the spaces left behind.

My thoughts: Seriously, the first few chapters of A Curve in the Road had me on the edge of my seat. The authors description of the car accident and the hours to follow were shared in such detail I felt I was there. And let me just tell you, I wasn’t putting the darn book down until I knew whether or not they found the dang dog!

The rest of the book kept me entertained and as a Kindle Unlimited free snag it was definitely a good read.

Chronological

My favorite read thus far this month, however, has been the Bible. I’m reading along with the Chronological plan on Bible.com and following up each day with the Bible Recap podcast. We started in Genesis, hopped over to Job and are back to Genesis. While there have been some stories I have run across previously, there has been so much I have not. Plus being in a group and listening to the podcast has really helped with comprehension.

Did you know as an Amazon Prime member you can pick two digital books each month as part of the Amazon First Reads program? My friend Tanya mentioned back in the fall and while there are only a few each month to choose from I’ve grabbed some interesting books.

Tanya also hosts a Prime Purchases linkup on the 1st Tuesday each month so be sure to hop over February 5th and linkup your Amazon Prime purchases or browse what others are deeming a prime find.

Now it’s your turn, what are you reading and what should I put on my list? I’ve heard The Last Mrs. Parrish is a must.
