Tips to Tackle Winter Doldrums
Seems like cold weather has taken up residence across many of our homes and we are in fact home for the day after a wintry mix warning closed our schools. I’m all for a little colder weather and love pulling out my favorite layers, but if you are like me the cold temps and short days can also have you feeling a little stir crazy and maybe even a little down in the dumps. Today I thought I’d share a few of my tips to tackle the winter doldrums.
When the sun breaks through, despite the cold, get out and take in some fresh air. Take a walk and enjoy some of the scenery around you. It’s always amazing to me no matter the season it is always possible to find something fighting to stay alive.
Bring the outside in. Find some berries, greenery or pick up fresh flowers from the store and add touches around the house. It is always amazing to me how fresh flowers can perk up a room
Head to the movies or settle in for a few movies at home. Whether you pick one full of laughs or a real tear jerker both can be so good for the soul.
Break out the games. I’m not the greatest at sitting down and playing boardgames with my kids but I realize when I do I’m the one missing out on all the laughter it can bring.
Pamper yourself! A fresh mani/pedi either at the salon or done at home is always a pick me up. Not into nails, enjoy a facial!
Fix your favorite comfort food! Mine would definitely include tortellini soup or this zuppa toscana. Pack up a warm meal and share with a friend or neighbor to warm your heart twice over.
Catch up on cleaning and organizing! When it is dreary outside my favorite thing to do is work on purging and organizing my home because I do not feel guilty for staying indoors. Purging can definitely clear your head as well and you will be ready to focus on fun once the cold subsides.
And if all that fails, grab a bright colored sweater and get dressed! It’s so easy to fall into hanging out in pajamas or athleisure wear and, while we all deserve to chill now and then, eventually you start to feel the way you dress. I love how these colors came together for a first time combo and the scarf really pulled it all together. White jeans really give it a pop too!

Flowers always do the trick for me as well. I love all these fun colors and layers. I wore my winter white this weekend too. Sierra~Beautifully Candid
Man those colors are gorgeous on you! I love bringing in fresh flowers! And I try to eat berries ever morning. Just love how fabulously fresh you look!
I love the bright colors, and that’s a great spot to take pictures. We are home today too, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we will be tomorrow too! Temperatures aren’t supposed to go above freezing until tomorrow afternoon!
Love that outfit you’re wearing, those white pants are perfect. Still in the search for the perfect white pants. Great tips! I think I would go crazy being inside all the time, I need to buy more fresh flowers. Love Spring when I don’t have to buy and I can go to my garden.
I am loving that outfit, those boots look amazing and great for so many outfits! I love playing games and making comfort food, it’s the best part about staying in.
Great tips Shelly! It’s so much better when the sun shines and it’s cold outside as opposed to the dark, dreary cold. Of course bright colors always help too!

In the last 7 days I’ve left the house 3 times, one to go to Urgent Care. I need all the ideas to survive this awful weather.
I just like getting out of the house… which I haven’t done much of lately. Hopefully soon!
I’m ready for Spring! These cold, short days make me antsy for warm weather. I love to dive into a great book and escape for a while.
These are all great ideas! Winter is not my favorite season but I’m trying to find ways to embrace it. I love playing board games, we need to do more of that! I do like snuggling up under a blanket and reading too! 🙂
Love your tips and I love that combo of blues and greens.
Looking lovely!! great tips x
