Getaways to Dream About
It’s no secret, my favorite vacation has been shared here more than once! If I’m going away with my family and need to chill I’m definitely heading to the beach. There is just so much in this world that I still want to see and have always struggled with how to really accomplish that in my short time here. Well, lately I’ve found new getaways to dream about!
So many of my friends “in real life” as well as blogger friends have been on amazing road trips this year. Here’s the deal, our family loves a good road trip. We have road tripped to Omaha 4 times, from California to Texas via Route 66, to Destin Florida, to Ruidoso, New Mexico and Springfield, Missouri. We always have a great time. Here’s the deal though, just getting out of Texas takes a REALLY long time and, honestly, the pieces of Texas I think are beautiful I have seen hundreds of times. Why in the world have I never considered planning a road trip with a flight to and from the starting and ending points? Well, maybe because sometimes I just don’t think that far outside the box! Thankfully I have some super creative friends who do!
Tanya from The Other side of the Road took her family on a fun trip this summer originating in Boston and traveling up the east coast. You can begin her journey here.
This past year Biana of B Loved Boston and her husband flew to California and spent a week exploring up the coast. It was a well planned trip and you can see from her 10 day itinerary.
If I can find a time to schedule it just right, the trip Cassie of Hi Sugarplum took with her family over spring break to several national parks. See her itinerary here.
My friend Katy, while originating in Texas, traveled up to Chicago with lots of fun stops on the way. If you really want to road trip with kids she has some tips to make your road trip great.
And lastly, my friend Cindy took the most amazing trip around Iceland in a camper van!! I wish she blogged so I could share it with you.
So I’m now on the quest to plan a road trip to see as much as I can in a 4 day window but still relax and enjoy some of this beautiful country we live in. If you have never browsed around Roadtrippers.com you definitely need to take a look. It has definitely given me some ideas to help me dream up a great getaway!
I’m looking for a 3 night 4 day or 4 night 5 day getaway for Keith and I to head out and do some exploring. Some of the top starting spots on my list to start building around are Seattle, Chicago or Boston. I need a little city for me but enough scenery and wildlife to keep my man entertained. All three have water nearby which always makes him happy!
Do you live in an amazing part of the country you think we should road trip through? I’d love to hear!

Wow, thanks for the shout out! I can’t wait to check out the other links! We have done the fly’n’drive trip for the past three summers and it’s a good way to see a lot of sites in a short amount of time. Since I just got back from Boston, that is the one I would recommend for you! It would be good for a shorter time because you could get to the beautiful coastline in a short drive. From Boston, you could go to Mystic, CT, Cape Cod, or up the coast to Kennebunkport, ME. Seattle would be great too! Great blog post topic!
I really do want to go to Boston and was thinking about taking my mom. Keith and I do not always see eye to eye on our vacations…he would be perfectly happy on a boat every day and I need something a little more stimulating and have this recent obsession with history and such.
Great idea and Iceland in a camper van..how FUN!!! Come on up to Amish Country here in Indiana, I’ll show you a grand time!! Loves ya girl, hope you get back in the swing of things today!
Seriously….the camper van trip to Iceland looked AH-mazing! Indiana is another state I’ve missed out on. Maybe one day I will cross it off.
We have friends that love taking road trips and making all sorts of stops, I can’t get my husband on board to do too much of that because he hates driving. I think if we planned lots of stops along the way it wouldn’t be so bad, one of these days, one of these days. A trip to Seattle sounds like a super trip and I also want to take an Alaskan cruise! I can’t wait to see what ya’ll do!
xo,
Kellyann
Our roadtrips are typically 10-14 hours and we don’t mind driving but how much more fun would it be to only drive 2-2.5 hours and stop to see the sites and spend the night along the way.
No vacation for us this year. Man these travel posts are really giving me the travel bug too :(. Maybe we can run away when the house is done to escape.
Staycations can sometimes be some of the most fun! Your girls would love doing an alphabet scavenger hunt around your town and they are clearly big enough to come up with this stuff. My kids loved this day and still talk about it. https://www.thequeeninbetween.com/waiting-onspring-break/
We are headed to Lake Tahoe as a family next month, and I cannot wait! It’s our most favorite place to be all together!

Ahh….Tahoe is so a place that is on my list too! I just cannot decide between summer and winter!
Chicago is an amazing city and you could travel to the west side of Michigan for a beach fix on Lake Michigan. It’s beautiful and my favorite place in the world.
Vicki that is definitely on my radar! We are definitely food loving people and I know Chicago would keep us from being hangry on our visit!
I’m so stuck on beach vacation and going the places that I love that I have to remind myself to step out of the box. Those all sound like amazing trips. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do!
Christy I’m the same. The beach is so my happy place to go when I need to relax!
Seattle to San Fransisco! So beautiful. You could even travel east to Yosemite. Or keep traveling south on Highway1 along the Pacific coastline. We are exploring more of the East Coast now and it really is beautiful the further north you drive so I’m sure Boston would be amazing too. And if you love seafood, the East Coast is your place 🙂 Can’t wait to hear what you decide.
Nicole that would be an amazing trip from SEattle to San Fran! Sadly we don’t have that much time. The East coast is definitely high on my list because I’ve never been.
Love that you listed what other bloggers did!
hey…that’s totally what we are all here for to support each other right?!!
Yes! The Keys! Fly into Ft. Lauderdale or Miami and rent a car (convertible?) and drive down US1 to Key West! You can either fly out of KW or drive back up the Keys!
We will more than likely be coming back to Florida next March for spring training….Palm Beach though. Keith came down for a work trip to Key West and he definitely would head back in a heart beat!
We used to road trip all the time when our kids were little and we lived on the East Coast. I love how you highlighted so many bloggers trips for reference. If you’ve never been to VA that’s a great state to see. It’s beautiful with lots to do. I lived there my entire life until 7 years ago yesterday actually. We were in Richmond and surrounded by so many fun, historical, beautiful places. (I feel a post coming on, thanks 😉 Williamsburg, DC, Charlottesville (Monticello and UVA), Mount Vernon, VA Beach, Shenandoah Mountains, Norfolk. We were lucky because Richmond was like the center of the wheel and all these were the spokes and within a couple of hours. Have a great week. Can’t wait to see what you end up planning!
I really do think the history would really be tops in that part of the country. The east coast is definitely on my list!
we love a good road trip! but like you said getting out of Texas, is a big deal! LOL we are actually planning one next summer 14 days…I hope it all works out for us! 🙂
Ahhh…..14 days you could see ALOT!!!
We love a good road trip, too! and haha about getting out of Texas. You are so right!! When my parents drive to visit my brother there it takes two days… one day to get through AL, MS, and LA and then one whole day just to get through TX! Haha.
So big Lindsay….and honestly some of it is just plain boring!
um…..Yes! Come to the central coast of California and we can go wine tasting! gorgeous area!
Would love to do that for a girls trip!
Let me know when! You have a place to stay: my beach house! We would have so much fun!!
Oooh road trips are amazing 🙂

Totally going to read Katy’s post for my upcoming 14+ hour road trip- yikes! I’ve wanted to do a long weekend in Arizona, Montana, or San Diego. Those sound ideal this time of year compared to H-town! Oh, and Savannah, GA is a gorgeous town if you haven’t ventured out that way!
Definitely going somewhere, anywhere, cooler sounds so good about right now!! Next summer or the summer after Dillon will play ball in Atlanta so that will be my first chance to head to Georgia and see a little bit of that state.
I vote for Seattle :)!! So many different ways you could go and see amazing things. I would love to fly to North Carolina and road trip around that area. I lived there for five years as a child but haven’t been back.
There are just so many great options Lana, but I am leaning towards Seattle. I really want to road trip out to Cape Flattery and back to some of the other sites; Ruby Beach, Merriman Falls, etc…let me know if you have suggestions.
OMG – so many options. I’ve never been to the PNW and it’s clearly on the list. Boston is AMAZING – so rich in history and fun food and Chicago is always good, too. You can’t go wrong. I am totally book marking this post because 1 – you are awesome and I love your trips plus all the other posts you linked have basically just planned our next 5 trips. 😉
So many of these need to be in the warmer months and that is the one big downfall with baseball being in the summer. Now that Dillon decided he’s done with football maybe next year I’ll squeeze in something fun.
