Friday Favorites – Listening Lately
Listening to podcasts is definitely something that ebbs and flow for me depending on what’s going on in my life. Sometimes I want a murder mystery or a cheesy rom com but most of the time I love listening to interviews that offer perspectives on life I can connect with or grow from. I thought I would share a few favorites I’m listening to lately with you today!
Do you know much about the Enneagram? While it is a personality test of sorts, it has become so much more to me. Once I learned my type (I’m a TWO), I was a little skeptical but after listening to some discussions on the Typology podcast and then reading Ian’s first book , The Road Back to You, I knew it was true. I have learned so much about how and why I respond to situations the way I do and it has caused me to improve my behavior in a way that builds up a relationship. It has helped me to understand pieces of my childhood that really developed this type as well as given me a better understanding of my own children and how to better respond and support them as well.
In his latest book, The Story of You, Ian dives in deeper and you can listen to him read the first chapter on the podcast in this episode. I ordered the book the same day! I think the Enneagram can be such a tool in personal growth and love it so much I’ve even considered going to training to become a coach. 🙂
Several years back when I was planning a trip to Nashville, I ran across Mallory Ervin and quickly became a fan girl on Instagram. Somewhere along the way I stopped being so obsessed and I had zero clue she now has a podcast! A friend shared recently and I’ve been listening ever since. Listening to Living Fully feels like sitting down with a friend plus I’m always a sucker for a southern accent! She also just released a book by the same name, Living Fully, and it’s on it’s way to me.
If I remember correctly, I found Kate Bowler as she was being interviewed on another podcast I listen to and her story drew me in. On her podcast, Everything Happens, Kate talks honestly and openly with people who have experienced dark times and what they have learned from it. Because Kate herself has experienced dark times first hand, you can feel the raw and authentic emotions in the podcast. I especially loved her recent interview with Katie Couric.
I have never been one glued to the news channels daily, but in 2020 I found myself sucked in and realized rather quickly it made me frustrated and anxious and, honestly, often confused. As I worked through the year with my chosen word “free” (yes, I know the irony right?), I realized I had a choice to make and that being free to choose the news I listened too was a gift. One of the sources I found during this time was SmartHer News. Jenna is a reporter who ditched the standard news scene and started her own. I love the way she shares and I have learned so much from her. While she is primarily on Instagram, she does have a newsletter as well as a website. I loved her most recent editorial piece, The Antidote to Joe Rogan. News that causes us to think for ourselves is a gift. Listening to varying opinions and then being free to develop your own is also a gift! I realized I could be more informed but also less anxious when I approached the news in a different way and I want to continue to grow that muscle (nod to my word of the year!) in 2022.
Now I’m off to present at a budget workshop this morning so don’t be jealous! Then we have a full weekend of dance contests out of town. Hope you have a wonderful weekend whatever is on your schedule!
