Football Mania + Spiel the Beans Linkup

Welcome to the Spiel the Beans Linkup today where Katy and I are asking who are ya rootin’ for?  We are sharing our favorite football team and would love for you to linkup yours!
Football Season
So I am asked all the time if I am an Aggie.  I never know quite how to answer as, you see, the Aggie Spirit is pretty fierce and they take things pretty seriously and I didn’t actually graduate from Texas A&M.  While my degree is from Sam Houston State, I was a commuter student and never really had the student experience but I’ve worked for Texas A&M for almost 25 years and have celebrated the ups and downs cheering on the Aggies.  If you have ever been to Kyle Field on a Saturday, you would know it’s really hard not to get sucked in!  It has always been loud but after a $450M+ renovation it should seriously be on everyone’s bucket list if you love college football!

The Spirit of Aggieland is real and the story of the 12th Man gets me every single time! Not only does the student section stay the entire game, the students stand the entire game!  You just cannot spend a day at Kyle Field and NOT feel the excitement.

Of course it all gets started with the overall Aggie gameday experience!  The first year A&M played Alabama after moving to the SEC our little town was all a buzz.  Holly and I could not wait to take the kids to campus and the night before to stir the excitement for gameday.  They of course ended up swimming in Fish Pond and we ended up with this priceless photo op!

Pregame includes the Corps march in along with the Aggie Band!
Lots of games and activities for the kids!
And plenty of photo ops!
Another big reason to visit Kyle Field?  The Aggies never, ever lose halftime!  The Aggie band is incredible and it never gets old!

This was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever attended at Kyle Field maybe because we just sucked it up and went in the pouring rain or maybe because we beat tu (otherwise known as the University of Texas) 27-16 or it could have been because these girls were just so much fun!

My kids have grown up with Aggie Football and I love taking a look back at the pictures.  I think they would all tell you they have such great memories at Kyle Field, even Riley who eventually chose TCU.  So many great memories with all of my favorite people!

I can just see these four singing the war him together for years to come! Hey…a mom can dream!

The only thing bigger than the crowd at Kyle Field is the amount of tailgating.  On Friday at noon a horn blows signaling all the tailgaters they can officially stake their claim on campus real estate. Some out of towners actually pay someone to do this for them!!  Cracks me up but I am not going to complain as we have enjoyed many a tailgate over the years with yummy food and cold beer.  And yes, one of our friends actually brought “Bevo” before one of the games for a photo op.  I love catching up with friends old and new on football weekends!

I promise these cans were empty, but don’t think these pictures won’t resurface sometime when they head to college!  These girls are messes.

Traveling with the Aggies has also been a highlight! These girls and I made a road trip to St. Louis in 1998.  Oh my goodness this game was so freaking exciting as the Aggies won the Big XII Championship against Kansas State 36-33 in double overtime!    We were super broke and really had no business going but the road trip was totally worth it.
The results weren’t as exciting but we still had fun traveling to California to the Holiday Bowl in 2006!

One more family road trip to San Antonio to see the Aggies in the Alamo Bowl in 2007.  We have only traveled to one additional bowl game since and decided we were bad luck!  Dillon now goes with my sister-in-law and the Aggies have performed much better…ha!

Speaking of Aunt Amy, she is the best when it comes to supporting the Aggies with goodie bags and special treats!  My kids can always count on lots of Aggie goodies and the McBerty kids have adopted her as well.

I seriously could go on, and on and on!  Lucky for you I still have most of my pictures on my old Mac!  If you ever find yourself in College Station, even on a non-game weekend, you should definitely add a tour of Kyle Field to your travel plans.  You can find more information on tours here.

  1. What a fun post, Shelly! We are huge Penn State fans in our house and every Saturday is spend with football on tv and tons of tailgating food! Right in our living room. Because being a military family, we don't often get the opportunity to go to the games except for maybe once a season. I need to get some photos of us all geared up in our blue and white outfits and write a post!

Thanks for sharing these wonderful memories!

  2. We Are! …..so much fun to find fellow PSU fans! I bleed blue and white out here in California and am a HUGE Penn State fan! My ex grew up in State College and his dad was a professor there. So we met in the 1980's and I may have divorced him but NOT my Nittany Lions! Some of my best memories are of attending games in Happy Valley! Nothing like attending a Penn State football game and the Blue Band arrives and the drum major does his flip and salutes the crowd! It is amazing! Even Kirk Herbstreit gets it right when he says Penn State student section is the BEST in the world! If I could live anywhere else in the world, it would hands down be State College, Pa.

  3. My daughter and I are still planning to come visit y'all in Texas! Doesn't look like it will happen this year, as we had originally planned, because she hasn't found a job! But we still want to come visit. Maybe next Fall! That is our plan for now anyway! Love seeing your excitement for Aggie football because you know I share the same love for my Nittany Lions of Penn State. We Are!

  4. I love the picture of the kids in the Fish Pond. So fun! We're just starting to look at colleges with Kendall, but may look at A&M this spring. My sister-in-law is an Aggie, so I know that would thrill her. I'll definitely give you a call when we do. I'd love for you to show her around.

  5. Oh my goodness! I love this in so many ways! Can I just come visit you and you can show me the ways of tailgating? I've always wanted to do that! My college didn't have a football team, sort of sad I missed out on that part of college, but hoping my kids will go somewhere with a big football team…fingers crossed. Loving all of the pictures and how many memories you are making there!

  6. I think you're about as Aggie as an Aggie can be! 25 years working there and all those football games, yeah, you're an Aggie! Looks like a lot of fun!

  7. Sarah…come on down!! We will definitely show ya how to tailgate. And I feel ya, after commuting to a college an hour away I didn't really have the chance to embrace that football program as a traditional college student. There are so many amazing schools to choose from in Cali so surely they will pick one!! And if not football…lots of great baseball too!
