Favorite Summer Indulgence + Spiel the Beans Linkup

·
Welcome to the Spiel the Beans Linkup today where Katy and I are sharing our Favorite Summer Indulgence(s)!  We would love for you to linkup yours!
I am typically pretty good about passing on treats during the year but come summer give me all the ice cream!  Ice cream to me just screams summer to me and it just brings back some sweet memories.
My fave is just plain Blue Bell Dutch Chocolate in a glass topped off with some milk.  My Meme always made us milkshakes when we stayed with her which was really just ice cream and milk and the ice cream gets this perfectly icey edges and it totally reminds me of her.  I will never forget her fixing the Tupperware shaker and the look on her face when she started to shake vigorously only to realize the lid was not on.  There was ice cream on the ceiling all over her hair and I”m positive a cuss word or two was uttered.  She was precious but oh goodness she did not like a mess!  When we spent the night it was always milkshakes or ice cream cones that she would deliver right to our bed while we were propped up watching TV.  Yes..really.  That’s the kind of grandma I want to be!
My daddy was also a sucker for some ice cream and when he was home the freezer was always stocked.  It was always a fun surprise when he would head to the corner grocery at night and come back with a selection of ice cream bars.  My very favorite was the grizzly bar which was chocolate ice cream covered in a chocolatey, nutty crunch.  So…darn….good!  Once we were grown he always brought back an ice cream to share with his dog Corkey.
The first summer after Dillon was born I came to realize how much Keith loved a good coke float.  It was probably the first treat Dillon really had at about 7 months and he was crazy over them.  I have such sweet memories of him bouncing on my bed, mouth wide open, waiting for another bite from his daddy!
Late night trips to Sonic for a Reeses blast or a drive through DQ for a yummy blizzard are some of our favorite parts of summer.  We even tried our hand at making a homemade ice cream in the Cuisanart and a simple vanilla with some bite size crushed candy definitely comes close to blizzard status!  I love having these special times with my kids.
If I really had my pick, though, it would be soft serve chocolate in a plain cone.  When I was growing up you could find chocolate soft serve at the Dairy Freeze down the street and it was my favorite. Rarely do you find a good soft chocolate anymore but in June when we were in Missouri we found the perfect chocolate custard at Andy’s and I was in heaven.
This one gets me in major trouble but when the hot weather hits it is the drink I crave the most!  At 210 calories for only 8oz it can really add up, especially when it’s super hot outside.  Thankfully I can only drink a couple before it’s time for momma to call it a night.
And of course shopping is probably my largest indulgence.  I mean there’s the #Nsale with new upcoming season clothes but then there are so many amazing sales at Old Navy and Gap and Loft where you can pick up tees and tops that here in Texas can be worn all year long!
The relaxed V-neck from Old Navy has been my absolute favorite and I scored several last week for like $5 each.  I’m so hard on items like this and the one I purchased in May already had a hole in it so I was super excited to pick up a few more.  The linen V-Neck at Gap is also perfect for wearing in the hot Texas heat but also will be great for laying under a jacket in the fall.
These indulgences of mine can get me in trouble with my pocket book and my waist band if I’m not careful!
So now it’s your turn to share!  What is your favorite way to indulge in the summer?

  1. Ice cream has always been a summer theme in my family as my father owned an ice cream truck in the 80's and when my oldest sister turned 16 and could drive it, she and I would run the route! Driving around neighborhoods, ringing the bell, and dishing out ice cream to our friends and neighbors! And now my sister owns her own ice cream truck! My kids love to visit Aunt Lor-Lor because, well, there's ice cream, and a seemingly unlimited supply and a million different choices…right there in her driveway!

  2. I don't have a link up today, but have to say that my favorite summer indulgence is also ice cream. My fave is always soft serve ice cream, but especially a chocolate dipped cone from DQ. In terms of Blue Bell, I love Cookies and Cream!

  3. Now I want ice cream. Did you see that Sonic has half price blasts tomorrow! I am pretty sure that is the date if my memory serves me correct. I haven't had my coffee yet :P.

  4. Blue Bell Cookies & Cream is Wayne's favorite. I'm more of a vanilla with chocolate chips! It was a hard summer last year with no BB!

  5. So I linked the wrong one first so I re did the link with the post that had my pictures. My computer was acting all sorts of crazy yesterday!!!

  6. I love all the memories you shared that involved ice cream, but especially the one of your grandmother making that milkshake. So funny! Aren't you thankful we have Blue Bell in our neck of the woods? I can't imagine any other ice cream in my freezer!
I'm bummed I forgot to link up, but I'm adding the next one to my calendar right now!

  7. I love all of the memories you shared. Also, your Meme sounds like THE BEST! What great memories. Up north it is hard to find Blue Bell ice cream, but it is really good. And lime-ritas….yes please! Have a great day and thank you for hosting!

  8. Damn the luck….due to all my indulging in June and most of July (as well as all spring) I'm on a 24 day challenge with zero sugar. 🙁 Plus the kids are gone to camp which means I can't even sneak a bite of theirs. Those dang blast are the best.

  9. I love all of these memories. I've never been to a Sonic before, although I like a good Wendy's Frosty, those are good, from what I can remember. Haven't had one of those in a LONG time. And you and me and ice cream, yes! They just opened a frozen custard place by us, it's pretty good, but nothing really beats the real deal 🙂 And Nsale, isn't July just about the Nsale?

  10. Oh my, now you have me craving ice cream. We lived for Carvel soft serve growing up. That twist and all those sprinkles! HEAVEN!!

  11. My Katie was heart broken when it was Senior year and time for exams and there was no Blue Bell last year at BU!!!

  12. We have Foster Freeze here in Cali and they have THE BEST chocolate soft serve cones. My favorite!! I am also a sucker for Peanut butter and chocolate from Baskin Robbins. And of course AW Polar Swirls or Sonic Blasts — Reeses PB cup of course! We are simple folk!! LOL

  13. I've noticed that, too! But I think I read somewhere that they introduced a new flavor either last week or the week before! Gosh, I wish I could remember the name of it! It had a weird name. I was like, what??

  14. We may not have a lot in our town but our lil ice cream stand, The Chief, was voted best in the state and its the best we have ever had anywhere. Sometimes on my way home from work, if all the guys are busy, I stop and get a cone with one scoop and that is my dinner! I'm a sucker for a good chocolate milkshake for sure!!
