Fall – Transitioning Your Closet

We have had some of the most amazing weather for well on a week here in Texas.  It has definitely given us a taste of fall and has me thinking about transitioning my closet a bit.  Today I’m joining Shay & Erika for the Workin’ it Wednesday along with Emily and Sarah for Fall Favorites and sharing a few of my favorite ways to transition my wardrobe to fall.

Color

There are just some colors which welcome fall to me and I love pulling them out more frequently even before the fall temps set in. Burgundy, olive and mustard are just a few of my favorites. Adding a pop of these colors to tone town those pieces you are still carrying over from summer brings a little more of a fall vibe.

Patterns

I’m not positive how I survived before learning animal print can be a neutral and fall is my favorite time to use a little leopard to warm up a summer out fit.  Whether a scarf, belt, shoes adding just a pop of leopard with a fun floral or a simple stripe will make and outfit fall ready.  Deep floral hues are another favorite pattern for fall and finding a balanced pattern in beautiful fall colors makes me happy.  I’m not sure how I missed out for so long on a little plaid in my closet but this pattern also typically makes my closet a lot more fun in the fall.

Booties

I’m not sure what we all did before booties entered the picture but if you took a look at my closet you would see booties are my shoe of choice!  Last year I added several pair of open toe booties which really became a game changer for transitioning in early fall.  In Texas we will still have weeks if not months before the weather is tall boot appropriate but we are ready to trade in our sandals for something that feels like fall.  Booties make the transition so easy! This pair was not part of the anniversary sale but it has been in my cart for a month waiting for a sale!

Layers

Another easy way to begin feeling fall is to add simple layers.  Vests are one of my favorite ways to add a little interest to a basic swing dress or simple tee as temperatures become milder. If you haven’t shopped for clothes on Amazon yet you should totally check this  vest out.  Super cute in tons of colors!   I also love a great field jacket and own way too many of both the jackets and the vests for someone who lives in a warm climate! This field jacket I have in two colors but look at this years down version.  Insert all the heart eyes!

If you are shy about mixing patterns, fall is a great time to try it out.  Start with a basic striped shirt and top with plaid or leopard and ta da, you will look like a pro immediately!  If you are still a little iffy, try a piece like this precious striped top with a little floral already built in.

I recently snagged this fun shift dress from Target on sale and it was the perfect piece to top with a utility vest and add booties for some fall flare.  I love how vibrant the jewel tones are and can’t wait to see how it looks with a mustard cardigan later this fall.  My necklace is an old Stella & Dot piece and probably one of my most worn and while it is no longer available you sure can find the knock off version here.

  1. Such cute ideas! My favorite thing to do in cooler weather is pair my stripes with my leopard scarf and utility vest. I’ll have to wait a few more months to actually wear it but a girl can dream, right? Love that dress from Target – it’s going to look GREAT with a mustard cardigan! Happy Wednesday dear Shelly!

  2. I enjoyed reading what was in your closet and what you had in store for fall, Shelly! LOVE booties, and am just now getting around to adding some to my closet. i love the idea of the open toe bootie, as like you in Texas, here in NC it can be warmer still into sept.-oct. I am excited to try more pattern mixing for fall.

  3. Great post Shelly! I returned my peep toes😭 so now I’ve got to find another alternative. I’m so bummed because I just thought those were so dang cute. I do love mixing stripes and other prints and plaids and animal prints are the perfect accompaniment to so many outfits. Happy Wednesday!

  4. I want everything in your graphic – just too cute!!! And you know I jumped on the open toe bootie train this year – not sure what took me so long!

    1. Lana after seeing so many people haul all their stuff to the curb these last few weeks I’m really going to focus on having less stuff. I know I buy way too much and sometimes so senselessly. I’m going to really focus on being more conscious as to what I’m buying and what I really need it for.

  5. You look amazing, as always! I can’t wait to get my striped and plaid shirts! Love your recommendations!! ❤️

  6. I love all the new colors, patterns, and textures that Fall brings-it’s so much fun to pile on the layers and the new accessories that you’ve had hidden away for the past few months 🙂

  7. Ooooh, love ALL of your fall picks! We have such similar style… I bet we’d be fun (and dangerous) shopping partners. 😉 Thanks for sharing!

  8. Give me all the layers and all the booties! My current favorite are my TOMS! Love them! Super cute Fall picks!

  9. Gorgeous shift dress – I love the colours on you. As for the ‘fall’ colours – I really like them. I went shopping yesterday though and I was a bit disappointed with what’s available in the shops. Maybe all the good stuff it yet to hit our shops here in Portugal!!
