Fall – Transitioning Your Closet
We have had some of the most amazing weather for well on a week here in Texas. It has definitely given us a taste of fall and has me thinking about transitioning my closet a bit. Today I’m joining Shay & Erika for the Workin’ it Wednesday along with Emily and Sarah for Fall Favorites and sharing a few of my favorite ways to transition my wardrobe to fall.
Color
There are just some colors which welcome fall to me and I love pulling them out more frequently even before the fall temps set in. Burgundy, olive and mustard are just a few of my favorites. Adding a pop of these colors to tone town those pieces you are still carrying over from summer brings a little more of a fall vibe.
Patterns
I’m not positive how I survived before learning animal print can be a neutral and fall is my favorite time to use a little leopard to warm up a summer out fit. Whether a scarf, belt, shoes adding just a pop of leopard with a fun floral or a simple stripe will make and outfit fall ready. Deep floral hues are another favorite pattern for fall and finding a balanced pattern in beautiful fall colors makes me happy. I’m not sure how I missed out for so long on a little plaid in my closet but this pattern also typically makes my closet a lot more fun in the fall.
Booties
I’m not sure what we all did before booties entered the picture but if you took a look at my closet you would see booties are my shoe of choice! Last year I added several pair of open toe booties which really became a game changer for transitioning in early fall. In Texas we will still have weeks if not months before the weather is tall boot appropriate but we are ready to trade in our sandals for something that feels like fall. Booties make the transition so easy! This pair was not part of the anniversary sale but it has been in my cart for a month waiting for a sale!
Layers
Another easy way to begin feeling fall is to add simple layers. Vests are one of my favorite ways to add a little interest to a basic swing dress or simple tee as temperatures become milder. If you haven’t shopped for clothes on Amazon yet you should totally check this vest out. Super cute in tons of colors! I also love a great field jacket and own way too many of both the jackets and the vests for someone who lives in a warm climate! This field jacket I have in two colors but look at this years down version. Insert all the heart eyes!
If you are shy about mixing patterns, fall is a great time to try it out. Start with a basic striped shirt and top with plaid or leopard and ta da, you will look like a pro immediately! If you are still a little iffy, try a piece like this precious striped top with a little floral already built in.
I recently snagged this fun shift dress from Target on sale and it was the perfect piece to top with a utility vest and add booties for some fall flare. I love how vibrant the jewel tones are and can’t wait to see how it looks with a mustard cardigan later this fall. My necklace is an old Stella & Dot piece and probably one of my most worn and while it is no longer available you sure can find the knock off version here.

I am SWOONING over that striped bell sleeve top. SO stinking cute.
Me too Beth…we will see what I think of it actually on me when it arrives. lol
Such cute ideas! My favorite thing to do in cooler weather is pair my stripes with my leopard scarf and utility vest. I’ll have to wait a few more months to actually wear it but a girl can dream, right? Love that dress from Target – it’s going to look GREAT with a mustard cardigan! Happy Wednesday dear Shelly!
xo,
Kellyann
Thanks Kellyann! That is definitely one of my very favorite combos and probably my very first pattern mix I ever attempted. haha
Such cute options for fall! I think that is one of the reasons I love fall so much, there seems to be so many options for outfits!
Peace!

It really is true of fall I think Cheryl. It seems to be the time of year I have the most options. Hope you have a super weekend.
I enjoyed reading what was in your closet and what you had in store for fall, Shelly! LOVE booties, and am just now getting around to adding some to my closet. i love the idea of the open toe bootie, as like you in Texas, here in NC it can be warmer still into sept.-oct. I am excited to try more pattern mixing for fall.
Have a great day!

Seriously Jess grab some open toe booties! They are seriously such a great transition shoe and I wear them literally Sept-May!
Colors are definitely my favorite way to start incorporating a little fall into my wardrobe when the weather isn’t cooperating. But can it just be time for blanket scarves yet?!
Lol….Whitney I will have to come visit you so I can use my blanket scarves! I have way too many considering there are like 3 days a year I can actually justify wearing one. Haha
Fabulous early fall look! I did the same thing in a recent post, only using a denim vest! Love the colors in your dress, and your booties!
Vests are just such an easy way to transition a dress to fall right? Hope you have a super weekend Amy!
I love this summer transition look! So dang cute! Love all of your picks, now I’m going to be waiting for those shoes to go on sale too!
I love all my peep toes Sarah! But those BP booties in cognac I totally need for my closet! I have another pair just like them from several years back and they are so comfy.
Great post Shelly! I returned my peep toes😭 so now I’ve got to find another alternative. I’m so bummed because I just thought those were so dang cute. I do love mixing stripes and other prints and plaids and animal prints are the perfect accompaniment to so many outfits. Happy Wednesday!
I’m wearing mine today and so far so good! Hope you find a new pair that work for you!
Booties booties booties!! What DID we ever do without them? Seriously? I can’t get enough of them!
Seriously Lindsay…I totally feel the same! They are the perfect transition shoe.
I want everything in your graphic – just too cute!!! And you know I jumped on the open toe bootie train this year – not sure what took me so long!
They are seriously the best Emily!
Yes! I love all your picks girl! Stripes are such a staple year round.

So many cute things! I’m trying not to buy anything until I get out my fall clothes – but it’s tempting!
Lana after seeing so many people haul all their stuff to the curb these last few weeks I’m really going to focus on having less stuff. I know I buy way too much and sometimes so senselessly. I’m going to really focus on being more conscious as to what I’m buying and what I really need it for.
You look awesome as usual
You are sweet Sarita! Hope you have a super weekend.
You look amazing, as always! I can’t wait to get my striped and plaid shirts! Love your recommendations!! ❤️
Thanks so much Brittany! Wishing you a beautiful weekend!
YES to pattern mixing, always! I love your green vest and that leopard scarf is just a necessity.
Absolutely a necessity! And my current scarf is so old I’m thinking it’s time for something fresh.
I love all the new colors, patterns, and textures that Fall brings-it’s so much fun to pile on the layers and the new accessories that you’ve had hidden away for the past few months 🙂

Southern and Style
Changing seasons is always fun but I think the change to fall is my favorite as far as pulling out the pieces of clothing and accessories I’ve forgotten about. Love the colors too!
Ooooh, love ALL of your fall picks! We have such similar style… I bet we’d be fun (and dangerous) shopping partners. 😉 Thanks for sharing!
Well….it might be dangerous because I don’t like shopping accept on the computer! We could probably find lots of trouble to get into.
I am loving all your fall picks! The mustard yellow tops with floral print are so adorable!
I just love that color for fall Laura!
Give me all the layers and all the booties! My current favorite are my TOMS! Love them! Super cute Fall picks!
Totally on board with all the booties Heather! Happy Friday!
I love your booties with that dress, Shelly—it looks fabulous!

thanks so much Jodie! What did we ever do before booties were an option?
I love how you styled that pretty dress with the utility vest!
Thank you Mary! It is one of my favorite ways to layer.
This is such a chic look! Love the layers! Your utility vest looks so good with your dress!
Jill
Doused in Pink
Thanks Jill! I think we can all agree a utility vest is a game changer right?!
Loive the picks dear, especially the scarves and the ankle boots. My favorite would be leopard-print scarf. The field jackets looked really stylishly rugged too, love to have that for this year’s fall.

Love your outfit and all the ways you transition to fall!
Thank you Fonda! I’m ready for some cooler weather.
Gorgeous shift dress – I love the colours on you. As for the ‘fall’ colours – I really like them. I went shopping yesterday though and I was a bit disappointed with what’s available in the shops. Maybe all the good stuff it yet to hit our shops here in Portugal!!

Suzy I would have to say I haven’t really seen lots of what I would consider fall colors either. Mostly burgundy and olive but not a lot of my other faves.
Great fall look and I love your choices for incorporating fall into your wardrobe! I am with you about booties – I just seem to keep adding to my collection. Hope they never go out of style!
Thanks for linking up with Fabulous Friday!
