Excellence in Playa Mujeres
We celebrated Carly Jo’s graduation with a trip to stay at Excellence in Playa Mujeres just the two of us. It was such a sweet time of sand and sun along with new inside jokes and just soaking up some relaxed mother daughter time. A friend told me about Excellence and it did not disappoint.
Of course we arrived hungry and were the first ones in line at the Mexican restaurant when it opened at 6pm. The resort had a handy app that helped you easily see what restaurants were open when along with the full menus for each. With a selection of Mexican, Indian, Asian, Italian, seafood and steak we did not go hungry!
The resort is an all inclusive and I would say top notch. All the food we had regardless of the meal was delicious and well prepared. The service was also quick and attentive. I’ve been to all inclusives in the past that offerred adult beverages but only a select few available as part of the all inclusive package. There were no exclusions and a wide variety of options. I was happy to find they could make a great skinny margarita and an aperol spritz!
Carly enjoyed a facial on our first day while I grabbed chairs at the pool. We opted for the quieter pool just outside our room on day one. It had a “lazy river” but it is definitely lazier than the ones we are use to. You definitely have to push yourself around. There are also hammocks out over the water and plenty of chairs. The bar in this area also made great smoothies and fresh coconuts from 12-2 each day.
Thankfully we are adjusted to heat and humidity as it was definitely hot and humid during our stay. On day two I headed down early for sunrise and really enjoyed the breeze at the beach. We opted to hang out on the beach the rest of our stay as it just felt much cooler. The water was the perfect temp and the salt water here just didn’t seem to dry out our skin the way it does in Texas.
There are lots of activities throughout the day and you can set reminders in the app to alert you to the ones you are interested in. We had fun at the sip and paint even if we didn’t follow the directions 100% and gave Ricardo a little anxiety. Ha! The nightime entertainment sounded lively from our room but we literally were sloths and turned in at like 8:30-9:00 each night.
On our last day we headed to the spa for a “couples” massage and to experience the hydratherapy. We had a few laughs as we went through all the hot and cold hydratherapy options but it was a fun new experience. I will say, this resort does feel very “couply” all the way around.
I was impressed with the cleanliness of the Excellence in Playa Mujeres resort and the care they took to keep it this way so discreetly. Each morning I made it out for sunrise, the beach had already been raked and was pristine. The pools were also always clean and fresh before the sun was all the way up. Our room was cleaned and restocked multiple times a day as well as having a nightly turn down service.
The only snafu we had was when American Airlines delayed our flight multiple times and finally until the next day. They did handle our transfer to another resort closer to the airport which felt clean and safe. However, at 3:30am, they cancelled our flight and there was not another flight out until the next day. I ended up booking a return flight on Southwest and am still crossing my fingers I will receive a refund for the return American flight. We were just ready to get home!
On our last morning, we rode with the rest of the AA passengers back to terminal 2 but had to then take a quick shuttle to terminal 4. The last picture shows us crammed into the front of the little van that I’m sure would not have passed safetly regs in the US! It gave us a little laugh.
This trip was just another reminder to me that you can’t buy more time. I will forever treasure this time I had alone with my girl with no stress or pressure from the outside world. Excellence in Playa Mujeres was a great choice!
This looks fabulous! I loved following along with y’all on IG! Two questions: Why this excellence over any of the others? And how big was your room? Dustin and I need a trip alone ASAP!! LOL

I chose this one because I have several friends who have gone here multiple times and loved it. It was a 30-40 minute trip from the airport but the area was nice and quiet and we knew we didn’t really want to leave the resort. Our room was a really nice size with a king bed and an L-shaped sofa. There was also a bed on the patio. We were on the 2nd floor but they do have swim up rooms that also have a bed on the patio. There is a facebook group titled “We Love Excellence Playa Mujeres” that you can join and find lots of info. One thing I saw there when someone was asking about other Excellence properties was that everyone also raved about the Oyster Bay Excellence.
This looks fabulous! So glad you found the time to get away!
