Linking up with
Narci at Grace and Love blog for the July Carpool Book Club! I missed June as I wasn’t able to make it through a single book with all the crazy
baseball happenings. July has been much more productive on the reading front as I have read two books and started two more.
The first book I finished was Bossypants. If you love Tina Fey you will probably like this book but it took me forever to finish and I am a fan. I may have been somewhat distracted with life but it just was not an easy read for me. There were definitely parts that had me laughing and just beware the F-bomb is dropped frequently. I have been a huge Saturday Night Live fan since I was young so it was definitely interesting to learn about some of what goes on behind the scenes. The biggest thing for me was seeing what a huge proponent she is of women in the work place. Here is a brief excerpt that definitely stuck with me.
This is what I tell young women who ask me for career advice. People are going to try to trick you. To make you feel that you are in competition with one another. “You’re up for a promotion. If they go with a woman, it’ll be between you and Barbara.” Don’t be fooled. You’re not in competition with other women. You’re in competition with everyone.
That really made me think!
The second book I read was by Melanie Shankle of the
Big Mama blog. Y’all, if you are not following her already you must! If you have not read any of her books they are all three such great reads! This was her first book and it is all about motherhood and just such a sweet read. She has a perfect way of pulling a little humor into the everyday and then finding the prefect time to interject a little Jesus. I really don’t know how I’ll make it until she finishes another book! Here is one of the pieces I highlighted in this book.
And as I think about all the declarations that have been made about mother love, I realize it’s because motherhood is the thing in a woman’s life that catches her by total and complete surprise.
So true Melanie!
Sidenote, it took every bit of restraint this past weekend while she and her bestie were in College Station on a roadtrip for Holly, Katy & I not to do some major stalking!!
I’m also joining Holly for her Waiting on Wednesday Link-up! What am I waiting for? I’m ready to pick up my baby girl from my mom’s later this week so we can work on packing her trunk! The Littles are going to summer camp next week at T Bar M. They seriously look forward to this from the day it’s over each year. While they are gone I’m hoping to finish a book or two!

I'm almost finished with Sparkly Green Earrings! I hope Mel knows how big a deal is for this non-reader! And, I can't wait till Sunday!!! Kids are SO excited!
Hey Shelley,
I came over on While I'm Waiting today and found your post. Sounds like you've been catching up on some good reading.
I haven't heard of Sparkly Green Earrings, but it sounds like a good book. I'll have to look for it~ Thanks for sharing…
I've been reading an old Erma Bombeck book where she talks about her teenagers and young adults. She is not politically correct at all, but she is hilarious!
Hope you keep sharing more good reads.
And, I hope you have a blessed day~
Melanie
Melanie's books are all great little reads! I use to love reading Erma Bombeck's column in the paper. Politically correct or not she was hilarious and "real". Have a great day!
I love Tina Fey, she cracks me up….but, I agree about her book! Everyone raves about it, but I just didn't get it. So glad I'm not the only one. As a long time reader of "Big Mama," I enjoy all of Melanie Shankle's books. I recently read "Chasing God" by Angie Smith and it blew me away!
Anne I will have to check out Chasing God….I am currently doing Angie's bible study, Seamless, and it has been incredible.
I loved Bossy Pants and Nobody's Cuter than You (so I guess I need to read the other two). Have you read any of Chelsea Handler or Andy Cohen's books?
I have not Stephanie….my daughter really likes Chelsea but I wasn't really clicking. May be a generational gap..haha
