Between the Lines – April Book Review

It’s been a slow reading month over here but I did knock out two books, neither of which were on my actual reading list!  I have been grabbing a few books from kindle unlimited and one was a winner while the other a flop.  Read ahead to see my April book review!

Amazon:  Weighted down by the loss of her parents, Blythe McGuire struggles to keep her head above water as she trudges through her last year at Matthews College. Then a chance meeting sends Blythe crashing into something she doesn’t expect—an undeniable attraction to a dark-haired senior named Chris Shepherd, whose past may be even more complicated than her own. As their relationship deepens, Chris pulls Blythe out of the stupor she’s been in since the night a fire took half her family. She begins to heal, and even, haltingly, to love this guy who helps her find new paths to pleasure and self-discovery. But as Blythe moves into calmer waters, she realizes Chris is the one still strangled by his family’s traumatic history. As dark currents threaten to pull him under, Blythe may be the only person who can keep him from drowning.

Oh….and Amazon also says this but evidently the kindle unlimited price of zero had me overlook it!  This book is intended for mature audiences due to strong language and sexual content.

My thoughts:  I had a really hard time getting into Left Drowning .  The story line jumps all over the place and it somewhat far fetched as to how some of these relationships developed almost overnight so deeply.  At some point I remember seeing I was only 38% done and could not even imagine how the author could stretch this another 62%! I also almost felt guilty reading so I may just not be a mature enough audience.  Keith on the other hand is cool with me reading more books like this.  Ha!  There is a second book in the series but even for free I’m not sure if I’ll pick it up.

Amazon:  Paris, World War I. Sophie Lefèvre must keep her family safe while her adored husband, Édouard, fights at the front. When their town falls to the Germans, Sophie is forced to serve them every evening at her hotel. From the moment the new Kommandant sets eyes on Sophie’s portrait—painted by her artist husband—a dangerous obsession is born.

Almost a century later in London, Sophie’s portrait hangs in the home of Liv Halston, a wedding gift from her young husband before his sudden death. After a chance encounter reveals the portrait’s true worth, a battle begins over its troubled history and Liv’s world is turned upside all over again.

My thoughts:  The Girl You Left Behind started out a little slowly but I was quickly sucked in as I was totally drawn to finding out what really happened to Sophie.  The author does a great job of developing the characters and bringing their emotions to life.  If you like Jo Jo Moyes I would add this one to your list.

And I know Girl, Wash Your Face was on my March list but I just had to add to the April review again to make sure you know how amazing this book is!  If you pick up any motivational book this year, this is the one.  Last week it actually became a NY Times bestseller!  Don’t stop with the book, though, because Rachel is amazing to follow.  I’m now addicted to her insta-stories!

Reading book reviews is one of my favorite ways to add reads to my list!  Can’t wait to hear what you are reading lately.
