5 on Friday – Back to School
My kids are back to school this week which means we are back to a schedule (yippee!) but also back to school lunches which are so not my jam. The first week is always so exhausting for the kids being up early, taxing their little brains all day and doing more physical activity so all lights have been off at our house by 9:30pm every night this week. I thought I would share our 5 days back to school with you! If nothing else, maybe the reality of our not so perfect week will give you some encouragement. Ha!
Monday
Everyone was up and ready to go! This year I decided getting dressed before grabbing my coffee and computer would be the smarter choice so I was dressed on day one before 7am. Breakfast was homemade waffles and bacon and everyone was excited about heading back to school. I actually made Dillon a sack lunch complete with a ham sandwich topped with leftover bacon. Carly made her lunch the night before because she likes to show me up like that! I did succeed in writing notes for both kids complete with a sweet bible verse to drop in their lunches for a little day one encouragement. Dillon drives himself to school and headed off after cooperating for the first day pictures! Carly Jo and I headed to her first day of junior high and after two school zones decided we needed to try another route on day 2.
My favorite is how full they are of words on the first day and share EVERYTHING! My least favorite part is all the paperwork they laid on the counter for me to sign.
Dinner was beef and broccoli which Carly loved but I have zero clue what Dillon may have eaten! They headed off for bed before 9 and I patted myself on the back for surviving day one with happy kids!
Tuesday
I actually made it to a 5:30am workout and back home to finish off the homemade waffle mix. Carly caught on and realized maybe it wasn’t so bad to let me make her lunch and I was actually feeling like such a homemaking mom for adding avocado to her sandwich! Since Carly had an 8am orthodontist appointment we didn’t have to leave super early and we were able to miss the school traffic. They both had a super day 2 and seem to be as excited as they could about the classes and teachers this year. Carly did inform me she really didn’t have to bring so many supplies from the list and the non bold items were optional. Note…I tried not to buy the said non bold items and she pretty much wore me down in the store until I purchased them.
Came home from work early to meet the A/C repair man and found out we need a new evaporator coil. Google that and you will see neither I nor my savings account were thrilled.
Dinner was shredded beef tacos and even Dillon ate them so I was feeling like a boss in the kitchen.
Wednesday
Lunches, check! I seem to be on a roll with this lunch thing and am surprised I like it but also wondering how long I can actually keep it up. Ha! Breakfast is back to “on your own” today and Dillon was out the door at 6:15 for his first athletic workout. We walked out the door at 7:38 but then I realized I forgot something and had to run back inside. After pulling out of the driveway I also realized we needed to roll out the recycle bin and so I ran up to grab that. We finally left our street at 7:46 and tried a different route to school.
The reality hit me this morning no matter which direction we head we must roll through at least one other school zone before making it to Carly’s school. Leaving our house any later than 7:35 will insure tons of traffic and also the encounter with every other person on earth who has no sense of urgency! After waiting behind two cars who were refusing to take a right on red I stated the obvious “no one has a sense of urgency” and my sweet, sweet almost teen points out “mom, you are such a hypocrite”. Y’all, I wish I had a picture of my face! Let’s just say the rest of the conversion wasn’t pretty and my sweet girl now knows if she wants to be early to school I will happily sign her up for the bus which picks up at the end of our street!
I receive a text from Dillon at 4:05 stating it was the worst day he has had in a really long time and that he is headed to buy a bag of ice. What? He arrived home and informed me his muscles started cramping up as he tried to run his timed mile run after school. Hello, it’s like still 101 out here and my kid has been in the a/c pretty much all summer. I headed to the store for pedialyte and gatorade and forced him to eat a banana. Sometimes even when they seem like an adult you have to remind them to eat, drink and take care of their bodies.
Carly needed pictures for a timeline project at school so we ordered 5 pictures to be printed at Walgreens. Upon arrival they informed us it would be longer than normal (like hours longer) because some lady sent an online order of 1000 pictures. You can’t make this stuff up. We bought 2 pints of blue bell and headed back home to wait.
Dinner was leftover tacos! Before heading to bed Carly asked if she had to go to school the next day.
Thursday
Whew, I had a 9am chiropractor appointment which allowed me to still make amazing lunches for the kids! I took Carly to school wearing my pj’s and she didn’t die.
Worked until 7:50, grabbed Carly from dance and headed home where Keith saved the day by having hamburgers ready. After eating clean and healthy all week, I ate a hamburger with cheese and the bun and may have also opened a can of Ranch Style beans which no one else would touch because the best buy date was July 21, 2018. Carly devoured a burger but Dillon asked for grilled cheese. Yep, I remember those days when I said I would never be making special meals just because they didn’t like what we cooked for dinner and I have clearly eaten those words.
I celebrated day 4 by having a cup of chocolate ice cream topped with almond milk.
Friday
Pillsbury cinnamon rolls for breakfast and sack lunches full of love are on their way. Note, I have not had any sandwich size ziplocs and have been wrapping the sandwiches in aluminum foil all week. Dillon informed me he likes that much better.
The A/C repair is happening today which will take 4-6 hours so I’m enjoying some coffee before trying a 3rd route to school this morning. Today the temps are estimated to be 102 with a heat index of 105-110 which made me think what the actual HELL.
The best part of this week is we all survived, had full bellies and everyone was relatively happy! It’s weeks like these when I realize I am kind of a fly by the seat of my pants kind of mom and God really did bless me with the right kids for me as they roll with the flow (mostly) and don’t mind taking a little responsibility for themselves. They are also really great at giving me constructive feedback…..and sometimes some grace.
Hope everyone is off to a great start to the school year!
