Girls Getaway – JW Marriott San Antonio

Girls Weekend - JW Marriott San Antonio
These girls are besties and how lucky could they be to have moms who are also besties?!!  These two met the day after Carly was born and they truly have the sweetest friendship.  We started a little tradition back in March for Holden’s birthday and instead of birthday parties we would celebrate with a weekend away.  In March we hit up the sites in Fort Worth.  Even though Carly doesn’t turn 11 until the end of September, we decided to go ahead and check this weekend away off our list!

It had been dry as could be in Texas for most of the summer but you can bet the day we were leaving the sky opened up with rain.  Thankfully there was no thunder or lightning so the JW Marriott pool and water slides were still a go.  These girls weren’t letting anything rain on their parade!
If you are looking for some low stress family fun and are in Texas, I highly recommend this venue. With a lazy river, 3 different water slide/raft type activities, a kiddie pool, 2 larger pools and a family hot tub you can’t go wrong.  The one thing I really love about this location verses some I’ve stayed at in other areas is you are still close enough to leave the property and do a little sight seeing if you choose.  Plus if your kids are old enough there is an adults only pool you can park yourself at while they play!

The first night we came in from swimming and sat by the fireplace in one of the lounges after grabbing a bite to eat.  The girls can have fun anywhere and make up all kinds of activities.

Seriously!  They had us rolling most of the time and it wasn’t just the wine we were drinking…promise.

We laughed so hard when we went back to the room to change and these two stopped, dropped and made a quick sock swap in the hallway.

They even managed a photo op with Mario and Luigi!  These little boys were such good sports.

Monday morning we woke up to more rain and just chilled around the hotel reading and such for a bit before heading to downtown San Antonio and the Market Square area.  I grabbed Carly’s cardigan, which is very similar to the Bobeau cardigan, during the anniversary sale and she loves it!
Mi Tierra - San Antonio Girls Weekend

If you read a lot of “best places to eat” type write ups, this restaurant receives mixed reviews.  It is as Mexican as you come with the colorful decorations and often there are mariachis playing and some would say it’s just a tourist location.  This was my third time to dine at Mi Tierra and y’all I almost licked the plate.  I rarely order enchiladas anymore but these were amazing!

We browsed the market area and the girls found these wrestling masks which were silly but we had to snap quick because it was against the rules to be trying them on.  Oopsie.

The girls did find these headbands so appropriate for them both.  They were just too grown up walking around looking at everything.  We really hoped to ride the boat along the River Walk and visit the Alamo but the weather just did not cooperate.

Back at the resort, still raining but all the girls wanted was for the moms to ride the water slides with them.  Who were we to argue and plus we were already soaked.  It was so much fun sharing the day with them!  They closed down the park at 8pm and we headed back in to our room.  While there are plenty of places to grab food at the resort we were bushed and I ordered a pizza from a local Pizza Hut.  Not only did they deliver to our room, they brought paper plates and napkins!

Need just one more amazing reason to stay at the JW Marriott San Antonio?  The bell man who carried our luggage to our room at check in took note we were celebrating Carly’s 11th birthday and had these cookies sent to our room.  He was just outstanding and even sent an extra robe so both girls could have one.

Tuesday morning and we needed to check out but, you guessed it, it was finally not raining!  We grabbed the girls and hit the pool as soon as the slides opened at 10am.

It was the best time even though the weather was not 100% perfect.Girls Weekend - San AntonioWe checked out around noon and with the sun still trying to make a comeback headed back downtown to the Pearl.  This is a developing area surrounding the original location of the Pearl Brewery.

This is a developing area with restaurants, a culinary school and a new hotel, Hotel Emma, which looks like a great couples retreat.

Lots of great art and scenery and they even hold a summer dance hall series.

Bakery Lorraine - San Antonio

Our main reason for heading down to the Pearl, however, was to eat lunch at the Bakery Lorraine. Let me tell you, this tomato soup and cheese toast was everything after a rainy few days!  Cutest little restaurant.

The four of us loaded up and headed back to College Station full of new memories.  The girls already told us they want to celebrate Sweet 16 in New York City and Holden literally said “I can’t wait to gamble in Vegas when I’m 21”.  Goodness….if their mommas can still keep up let the tradition continue!

  1. I love the getaway idea and that place looks awesome. My kids would love the slides and lazy river. Too bad it was so rainy though!

  2. Love everything about this weekend, except the weather! The mexican food looks like true Tex-mex. I definitely need to look into staying at the JWM! And a trip to San Antonio would be perfect for us. We used to go ALL the time, but with our move etc. haven't been in about 6 years.

  3. What a sweet weekend with those girls. Love that they kept you guys moving and smiling even when the weather wasn't exactly ideal. That hotel looks like SO much fun too!

  4. That JW Marriott sounds fantastic. And I am old enough to remember Pearl Beer! I had an uncle that drank it. Great restaurants. Mi Tierra has been around forever. Looks like a beautiful place and fun weekend with the girls. Special memories!
