Thirsty Thursday + Book Review

Today I’m joining Michelle at Grammie Time for her Party at My Place Thursday linkup where the prompt today is Book Wino.  I’m always up for sharing a bottle of wine and have actually completed a record 4 books since May!
Let’s get sipping first.  This is one of my favorite wines and depending on where I purchase and the age it ranges from $9-$20 a bottle.  That’s right, big spender here.  I’m pretty much a red wine drinker and this one is smooth with just the right hint of berry.
Chasing Sunsets was actually a nice surprising read.  Before we left for our Missouri Roadtrip I was looking through books which were free on my ipad and ran across this one.  I really did love the story line.  It was an easy read and just left me feeling happy.  She is evidently a Christian author so there was some talk about prayer and God in this book which was refreshing.  I was excited to learn there are two more Cedar Key books in the series, Waiting for Sunrise and Slow Moon Rising.  Super cheap on kindle too.

Me Before You is the most emotional book I’ve read in a very long time but well worth the ugly cry.   I still have not seen the movie but can assure you this is a really worth the read.  The characters and the story are so believable and I so loved every word.  I also finished After Youand, while it did not stir my emotions quite the same it would still be high on my list.

Oh how uncomfortable I am with silence but did you know that some countries actually consider it rude to fill every moment with small talk?   I definitely am the queen on opening my mouth when I should be listening instead.  More often than not I can be found spouting off words when I’m ticked off.  Here are just a few of Karen’s quotes that spoke directly to me!  Oh how my mouth has caused so much pain.

“Our words are powerful, and they have consequences.”

“Don’t say something permanently painful just because you are temporarily ticked off.”

“My words, sometimes even my lack of words, have caused me much pain over the years. It hasn’t always been that I have gossiped or lied. Sometimes I just talk too much. Or I repeated the words of others, which I should not have. Other times I have tried to say the right thing, but it came out the wrong way. Or I have said the right thing but in the presence of the wrong people or at the wrong time. There was just no shortage to the ways I could misuse my mouth.”

“We might have to choose to let go of the need to prove our point, choosing instead to do the right thing: to impart grace and deal with the other person in love and with utmost patience.”

I didn’t remember until I began reading this book that I read another of Karen’s books, Let. It. Go., years ago.  I am kind of thinking I may need to reread it!

  1. Hey dahling! Me Before You, I've been trying to get that book from my library but always fail because the wait is soooo long. I'm a red wine girl too but I settled for some Pinot this week…so freaking sweet. I'm off to get a new book this evening maybe I can find the one you suggested this week! Have a great day – snap ya later! Amanda

  2. I'm glad you liked Me Before You, and I agree that the second book is good but not great. You must see the movie though! I have been starting books, but not finishing them this summer. The computer keeps stealing my attention! Hope you have a good Thursday!

  3. Well I think most know how I feel about Jojo's books. HUGE FAN! Haven't seen the movie yet either. Every. Single. Quote. You shared here on the tongue – GUILTY! I picked that book up at the library way back when I thought I was going to read it and confession – I was convicted just skimming through the pages and at the time thought I don't have it in me emotionally to even think about reading it. I hate when God speaks to me that way. No, I was obedient and I didn't read it. Now that you've shared some of its contents, this may be the right time to pick it up again.

  4. “Don’t say something permanently painful just because you are temporarily ticked off.” wow – I definitely need to remember that one!!!

  5. Your red wine sounds delicious – I will have to look for that next time. Also I have never heard of "Keep it Shut" but I think I will be adding that to my list of books to read. Have a great day.

  6. I needed to see this LAST NIGHT! AAARRRGGGHHHH! Ok so I just ordered this book. I think this may come in super handy. My mouth opens before my brain engages.

  7. I loved Me Before You and I usually hate books with sad topics. I do want to see the movie. I wonder if it would look bad to give my mother in law the Keep It Shut book 🙂 – she hates silence and never says the right thing!

  8. You know I'm a small town girl, so we don't have a huge selection of vino here, but we do have one gas station that sells Avalon. That's my go to red wine if I'm in a pinch & haven't been to Trader Joe's in a while. You have good taste, friend! Do you like Messina Hof? We toured it when we lived in Waco about nine years ago. It's beautiful! The winery in Waco (I can't remember the name…it starts with a T and is really long) has some good wines, too, and the owners are fabulous & knowledgeable. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a Saturday afternoon drive.

  9. I really want to read "Me before You" but don't want to ugly cry!
I'm a total pinot grigio wine drinker! I wish I liked red!

  10. Me Before You was so good (and I honestly don't think it deserved all the negative press that went along with it). I'm loving The Royal We… you'll love it!

  11. It was a really convicting read Jessica. I need to go back through and pull all my notes out to keep handy. I did that with the Best Yes and it has been so nice to look back on. Keep it Shut does have a bible study that goes along with it….wish I had known that before hand.

  12. Oh Sarah….I could not put it down. My husband was like what is going on when he walked in on a Saturday at like 11 and I was still in my pj's bawling in bed finishing it up. Haha..a book has to be pretty good to get me to cry.

  13. Haha…Michelle we all have to be ready to take those hard looks at ourselves don't we? It was definitely a convicting read for me. Oddly enough I had two interactions with people I love dearly just before reading and all I could think of was how bad my mouth had behaved!
