So this morning
Riley and I are catching a flight to LA and then making the drive to Lancaster to pick up his truck so we can drive it back to Texas. I love a great road trip but this one will be super long with not nearly as many fun stops along the way. I’m hoping to embrace the extra time I’ll have with my boy and I have no doubt we will find a way to have some fun along the way.
As I was planning our route home I decided to go ahead and look for anything fun along the way that might be a possibility depending on the time of day we are passing through. I didn’t even realize until I started looking that I-40 is along the historic Route 66.
In Winslow, Arizona at mile marker 233 is the Barringer Meteor Crater. I figure why not if it’s “just off the road”.
We are actually staying Saturday night in Albuquerque, New Mexico and if we make it in time I am so planning to take a ride on the Sandia Peak tramway. There is also a restaurant at the top so we will see how that might work depending on the time of day.
I’ve also been interested in seeing Cadillac Ranch at mile marker 62 but traveling to Amarillo has never been on my radar.
The Route 66 Diner is also in Albuquerque and it looks like a fun place to pop in.
I really hate how close we are going to be to the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest and the Painted Dessert without stopping to show Riley the views but I really just do not think this will be in our timeline.
So what else do you do with an adult child in the car on a 23 hour road trip? I have no doubt Riley will keep me entertained with all kinds of politically incorrect gab. He also downloaded some apps that are suppose to provide us locations of “famous” places along the way to eat (my heart skipped when he told me this). I did find
14 Road Trip Games for Adults on Buzz Feed and while most of these need more than one passenger to participate, I think the Regional Food Master game will definitely be something Riley and I can both appreciate!
The Rules:
• At each gas station you stop at, you have to find a local snack
• You can only get one food item per gas station
• The food item has to be created within the region the stop is located
• Whoever has the most snacks by your destination wins
• Duplicate cities don’t count
I also was thinking that listening to podcast might be fun but I am totally clueless in this arena. Please share if there are Podcasts you love!

Hope you all have a super weekend!

Amarillo was never on your radar? What?! Be sure and wave at Amarillo National Bank as you drive by downtown! 🙂 And I TOTALLY think you guys should play Would You Rather! Be careful!
LOVE THis!! I hope my boys will take a road trip with me someday and get some one-on-one time with each! You guys are gonna have the best time and that game sounds so much fun especially because we had Love getting snacks at the gas station, ha ha. Have the most amazing time with your sweet boy!
Sounds like it will be an unexpected adventure for you and Riley. Hope he is doing well after surgery. Flagstaff has a really cute historical downtown area that might make a good pitstop.
I so loved baby girl and I's trips to Waco and back each year! When else are you going to get to hold your adult child captive for that long?????!!! Bawwwwhaaahaaahaaa…
Have fun & be safe!! That game sounds like so much fun :).
Yikes! My Dad use to live in Albuquerque. That is the longest drive ever (from DFW). I can't imagine driving all the way from California. At least you have some quality time with your son though. Safe travels!
So much fun
If we play that I'll be sure to take notes because I'm sure it would be hilarious
Thanks for the tip Tanya! We might actually try to make it to Flagstaff tonight!
Right?!!! He was worried I was going to talk too much lol
what a fun trip!! I can't wait til my kids are old enough to enjoy this kind of adventure! So glad Riley is doing great!
I know you are having a blast! So is Amarillo a dump?
Ok so I missed this post on Friday (was a bit occupied with Taylor graduating college!) so now I see why you are driving across country! LOL so sad to not get to see Riley this summer but maybe next summer! Taylor and I are still planning a Girls Trip but we are going to try to make it in October now so Tay can visit her friend at A&M!!
What fun! I love random road trips like this. How can you not drive on Route 66?? And in Albuquerque we had fun visiting the old town part. A quick hour stop with some food and then back on the road. Hope all is going well!!
Katie @ Cup of Tea
I loved following along on Snapchat & Instagram! 🙂 (Also, love your rules. I'll need to incorporate that fun game the next road trip we take!)
I really like road trips when you get to see things along the way!
oh man you were so close to me on Friday!! Hope your road trip went well~
Definitely makes things more interesting!! The drive from Amarillo to Dallas was B-O-R-I-N-G after seeing so much pretty stuff through Arizona and New Mexico.
Emily I'm totally addicted to Snap..totally. It's been so fun seeing the "real" lives of everyone. 🙂
Awww man….I totally wish I had seen your comment Katie!! We stopped to eat in Abuquerque and Riley was totally unimpressed with the authentic mexican food. 🙂 It would have been fun to see the old town.
Eek….I'm totally jazzed up about this!! Girl….if y'all come on a football weekend it would be so fun!!
Haha….well…let's just say driving into Amarillo you pass all the feed lots and it smells like cow sh!t. 🙂 It's flat and windy as crap and it just didn't really speak to me.
Thanks Shaunacey! It was nice to have this time with him.
Emily I was totally shocked it ended up not seeming too back at all. We had a nice time together.
I was the winner Blake….hands down!! 🙂
It was really great Andrea….highly recommend it for some one on one time. I mean…they are trapped in the car and while they are driving and off the social media you have their attention. 🙂
Oh this trip looks like so much fun. I hope y'all had a blast. Can't wait to read about it :).
George left that part out of his song!!! LOL Amarillo by morning, smells like cow poo…bahahahha
