Trunk Club Review

Have you heard of Trunk Club?  While I have used Stitch Fix multiple times the past several years, when I read Jo Lynne’s review of Trunk Club I decided it might be a better fit for me.  One of the biggest pros for me was no financial commitment up front.  That’s right zero!  I also loved one on one interaction with a stylist and the ability to review my trunk and make changes prior to shipping.  Just like Stitch Fix, the shipping to and from is free and easy.  So here is a little about my experience.
Spring Fashion

The stylist assigned to me, Gretchen, scheduled a time via email for us to chat by phone.  We discussed my style for probably 15-20 minutes and also talked about any special items I was looking for.  For me, I was looking to add a few key spring pieces to my wardrobe.

Spring Fashion

I received an email several days later letting me know my trunk was ready to review and I couldn’t wait to hop online to see what was waiting for me.  At first I was a tad disappointed as many of the blouses she picked for me were quite pricey.  I just cannot justify the $100 on a top unless it is just out of this world because I would feel the need to keep it forever!  I easily removed those items from my trunk and noted the reason.

Spring Fashion

I was feeling a little dejected as I assumed my trunk would arrive much smaller but much to my surprise Gretchen listened and modified my trunk to include lots of great tops in a more reasonable price range for me.

Spring Fashion

Here was the first top I tried.  I wasn’t super crazy about the pattern but the cut originally appeared a possible win.  Unfortunately this was a big no.  It ran a little too short and really just did nothing for me.  Returned

Spring Fashion

Next up were these NYDJ jeans and while the fit in the waist was great and the length perfect, I did not care for the style at all.  I’d actually like to say, in this case, I would have liked my jeans a little more like my daughters.  Returned

Spring Fashion

Peplum tops are all the rage right now and I was super excited to see this one.  I loved the pattern but as you can see it also ran a little short.  Somehow my frame just doesn’t seem to really love peplum. Peplum top here.  Returned

Spring Fashion

Would love to have shown you these white pants but friends I couldn’t even get them on!  I’m not sure if there was a sizing problem or what but in my regular size I couldn’t even get them over my thighs.

Spring Fashion

Oh how I loved this top!!  I really wanted this one to work for me.  I loved everything about it right up until I put it on.  My arms are weird.  I can wear sleeveless but if there is the slightest cap on the sleeves it makes my arms look so much bigger.  Hinge flutter sleeve similar here.  Returned

Spring Fashion

I tried several angles and several different pants because I so wanted this top to work!

Spring Fashion

This simple Kendra Scott just did nothing for me.  Granted it worked with so many of the items she picked for me but if I’m buying Kendra it is going to be a fun color.  No?  Returned

Spring Fashion

This color is one of my faves and as soon as I put this on I knew I would be splurging.  The fit was perfect, great fabric and it is very flattering.  NYDJ Blouse in multiple colors and prints here.

Spring Fashion

Not so flattering in this view but I had to show you the back!  Love this NYDJ henley top and it has totally found it’s home in my closet.

Spring Fashion

And y’all, it’s like she knew it would be perfect because she also sent in pink!  I really wanted to splurge and keep both but in the end decided to send this one back.  It was a little more sheer than the teal.  NYDJ blouse in multiple colors and prints here.  Returned

Spring Fashion

I’m seriously wondering at this very moment what in the world I was thinking because I returned these!  I have two pairs of these shoes in a flat style and love them.  I really thought I needed these as well but in the end just couldn’t justify the price tag.  Find them on sale here.  Returned

Spring Fashion

If you can’t tell by my face what I thought of this let me tell ya…yuck.  I know the longer jackets are in style right now and you would think with my height this would work but it so did not!  It was boxy and just, no.  I did love the color!   Long Halogen jacket here.  Returned

Spring Fashion

I told Gretchen I was looking for a new black jacket but she sent this Halogen in navy for me to try. While it was a great fit and I loved the zipper detail, I already have a navy blazer.  Halogen jacket here.  Returned

Spring Fashion

Peplum and cap sleeves again…let’s just say remove this from any options for me!  Not something I can pull off at all.  Black peplum on sale here.  Returned

Spring Fashion

Hmm….I’m still not sure what I thought about these navy pants.  They fit pretty well but I recently purchased a navy pair as well.  Returned

Spring Fashion

As soon as I saw this skirt I was hoping it would work and y’all it did!!!  I love it.  I’m still working on things to wear with it (and again why did I send back those darn shoes) but I wore it with a white top for Easter and I really loved the way it fit.  I have a hard time with pencil skirts sometimes but this one had just the right amount of give to not be too tight through the hips but was snug enough not to ride up.  Halogen skirt here.

Spring Fashion

Isn’t the pattern great!  Another piece at home in my closet!

All in all this was a good experience.  I think with any of these services it will only be as good as the information you provide up front.  The are stylists not magicians!

+ delivered to my door
+ no upfront cost to me
+ personal interaction with the stylist by phone
+ 15 items to try
+ brands I have never tried
+ review and remove items prior to trunk shipping
+ 10 days to try on in my home
+ UPS scheduled pick up for return was a snap
One thing Trunk Club did not provide, which Stitch Fix always does, is a card giving suggested ways to wear the items.  That would have really come in handy especially with the skirt.

  1. I've never tried any of these "box" type services. I totally appreciate you writing, in readable font, about your affiliate links. I don't have a problem with them at all, but so many blogs lately have like 40 affiliate links in a single post. And many are just not too upfront about it! And those shoes….LOVE them. Happy Thursday !

  2. Trunk Club sounds like a real win, especially getting to talk to the stylist and rejecting pieces you know won't work before they ship. Also, I like that the items can easily be found in-store in case you like the style. The skirt is definitely the winner in this mix! Love it!

Ditto with Kimm about the affiliate links. I don't mind them at all, but it's great that you disclosed it. My only pet peeve with the links (and I don't think you do it!) is when a blogger will say "I'm loving this…" with no picture or text saying what "this" is. You HAVE to click the affiliate link to see what they're talking about. Seems like a sneaky way to get more clicks!

  3. My daughter is a stitch fix queen. Not sure if she does this one yet. You have some great outfits here. I don't think that would be my style of shopping. I am the worst when it comes to clothes shopping. I have to go alone because I drive anyone who goes with me NUTS!

  4. I actually have had a lot of success with Stitch Fix, so I'm sticking with them. I like what you picked, but I also think those shoes are great and I love the black peplum top on you.

  5. I did Stitch Fix for a while. I loved the surprise and cards with suggestions, but in the end didn't keep that much. Wasn't always wild about the quality. This would be worth a try. Love the skirt the most and yes – you should have kept those shoes!

  6. You know I know you need those shoes, ya know, lol!! This sounds really fun. Gonna ask the Mister if I try a box, he'll be my critic and honest reviewer, lol. LOVE the Skirt, so pretty and it looks gorgeous on you!!

  7. I use to do Stitch Fix and have been thinking about starting back up. Instead, I'll give this a try. I just signed up from your referral link. I do like that Trunk Club gives you more time to send back the items than Stitch Fix.

  8. Thank you for such a thorough review. I loved it. They send you soooo many items and OMG no monthly charge? I might have to try Trunk Club and if I do I will use your referral. I agree, the NYDJ blouses, that lacy pencil skirt and the white shoes are my favorite. How much did the skirt and shoes cost? I just bought a very similar teal/turquoise blouse from Loft. I love blouses in that style, but I may need the blush/rose quartz one from NYDJ. I bet it is pricey though. And that KS necklace I didn't care for either and usually I love her stuff.

  9. I've been wanting to try Trunk Club. I like that the stylist actually phoned you to chat about your style beforehand and there were no upfront fees! That skirt is gorgeous and definitely a keeper! Thanks for your thorough review!

  10. The NYDJ top was definitely a splurge for me Ada. I typically pay $50 at the high end for tops and I think it was $88. The shoes are actually on sale right now but when they arrived in my trunk they were hitting $100. I am so hard on shoes so I really try not to spend too much. Hope you have a super weekend!

  11. I definitely found some winners with Stitch Fix the first several times but the last two times I ordered I lost my $20 as everything went back. And I tried all the tricks I'd been told about….lowered my age, sent them to my pinterest board…sent them to my blog even. I felt like they didn't even bother to look the last time. I see what others receive and I'm like dang…can I just request their box! haha

  12. Me too Chelsea. I will wear them for a bit and walk around the house purposely passing mirrors just to catch a glimpse and see if I like the way it looks. haha. Plus sometimes a pair of pants will just stress a little too much after a little wear and I really like to be able to have a little time to be sure they are right for me.

Hope you are having a great weekend!

  13. I definitely need to include that disclaimer in all my actual posts instead of just the sidebar….I really do not have the intention of trying to mislead….it's more being too lazy to go pull the wording every time. Glad you ladies commented…will definitely work on making it more of a priority.

Hope you are having a super weekend!

  14. I really do need to include in my actual post more…..it's pretty much just me being lazy most of the time. Thanks for letting me know your feelings about it. I will definitely be more mindful in the future.

Hope you are having a great weekend!

  15. I meant that I totally appreciate you letting us know about your affiliate links! It's so refreshing, when like you did, people are upfront about it. Then I have NO issue at all with it! And seriously get this shoes girl. They are beyond fabulous

  16. I have avoided any type of subscription services because I already shop way more than I should. I think it's a great idea for people that hate shopping.

I enjoyed your review of the service.

Thank you for being a part of TBT Fashion link up and hope to see you soon!

  17. I have never tried one of these services but after seeing what was in yours I am going to give it a try. It sounds like I have nothing to lose and might get a couple of cute outfits.

  18. As soon as I saw that teal henley on you I was hoping you kept it. It was such a great color on you and the fit was so flattering! I also really love the pencil skirt you kept. The one thing that holds me back from trying these subscription type services is the price of the clothing. I am definitely a sale shopper.

  19. I typically only place an order at the beginning of each season and really love just seeing what things they might send that I would have never picked for myself. I would agree…would rather buy on sale too! I suck at picking accessories sometimes too and have ended up with a few fun pieces. Hope you are having a super week!

  20. Thanks for the pricing tip. I am a straight up Macy's shopper with Nordstrom's in there if I need something extra special and it is a rare day when I get my shoes somewhere other than DSW. I am very hard to fit so it will be interesting. Plus I am retired so really only need simple things.
