Today I’m joining Andrea for her Show and Tell Tuesdays series!
It’s time to confess some of my “Momfessionals Moments” so grab your coffee and join me!    Here are some of my not so proud mom moments.

Nude Pictures are Always a Bad Idea

Two summers ago I was in search of a new swimsuit and spent the afternoon wandering from dressing room to dressing room.  Later that night we were grilling and I grabbed my phone to take a picture of Carly.  As I went to view the picture I was like what in the hell??  It was a naked person and upon closer inspection it was a naked picture of ME!  Carly had been along for the shopping trip and as often was the case, she was using my phone for entertainment while I tried on clothes.   Little did I know her entertainment was taking pictures of me in the mirror as I wriggled out of the swimsuits.  It was the most awkward picture I have ever seen!

 Clean Your Plate

We had a lot of highly nutritious meals such as pigs in the blanket when my Bigs were young and one night Jordan had just a few bites left before deciding to add about half a bottle of mustard to her plate.  I don’t think we actually made her eat all of it but we definitely made her think she was going to have to enough to get our point across.   She still loves mustard so no worries!  Jordan is always saying “when I realize you had us when you were my age it makes so many of your parenting decisions make more sense”.  For real!

Wear Your Seatbelt

Riley has always been one to push everything to the limit.  When he was only two he learned to unbuckle himself from his car seat and often I would be driving along and all of a sudden he would be standing behind my seat talking to me.  Obviously there were probably other things I could have tried but finally one day as we pulled onto our street and I realized he had once again unbuckled and was standing I tapped the breaks just enough to have him fall into the seat thinking it would teach him a lesson.  He thought it was a game!

If Your Not First Your Last

I went back to work when Carly was about 6 weeks old but was only working part time.  One day I had a hair appointment so my mother in law kept Carly and dropped her off with me at the salon.  I was feeling so fabulous with my newly styled hair that I hopped on over to the grocery store.  I was walking down every aisle, planning meals and enjoying some time with a non fussy baby and nowhere to be.  After unloading all of my groceries onto the conveyor I looked at my watch and all of a sudden it dawned on me; I DID have somewhere to be!  It was 5:50 and Dillon’s daycare closed at 5:45 and I was halfway across town!!  I shamefully had to call a good friend who lived near the daycare to pick him up.  He learned if your not picked up first you will at least be picked up last and your mom will feel so terrible that you can pretty much name your prize!

Have Independent Thought

When Riley was in 3rd grade he left his shoes at his dad’s over the weekend so when Monday came he was out of luck.  I called his dad and he was going to bring the shoes and take Riley to school.  I left and dropped off the other two and headed to work (Reid only lived about 2 blocks from me).  Later that day I texted Reid to see if everything had gone alright and he said “What do you mean?  I left his shoes on the front porch because no one answered the door.”  Instant panic mode!  I had to call the school and ask if he was there?  What mom has no clue if their child made it to school much less how they may have arrived there?!!  Come to find out, Riley thought it would be funny to hide from his dad when he came so he didn’t answer the door right away.  By the time he did answer his dad was gone!  We lived less than 1/2 a mile from his school so he hopped on his bike and got himself to class.

Lunch is Overrated

For the most part my kids take their lunches to school every day and more times than not they also make their own lunches.  I make sure there are plenty of individually packed items with some nutritional value available but they get it together.  There are those days after a busy weekend when the pantry is empty and I tell them not to worry about packing a lunch and I will take something to them.  All moms know the number from the school office and when it showed up on my phone I just thought the ladies were calling me about some new checks in the treasurers box or something.  As soon as I heard the secretaries voice say “Shelly” I knew instantly I had forgotten to take lunch.  What was worse is they were calling from Carly’s school which meant I had already forgotten Dillon’s lunch which had been over for at least 30 minutes!  Thankfully Carly had money in her lunch account and was able to get a tray and after emailing Dillon’s sweet teacher she found a couple of rice krispie treats to get him through the day!!  They have never let me live this one down.

You Win Some You Lose Some

Riley’s senior year it was all about Friday night baseball.  It was the highlight of our week and we loved meeting up with other parents in the parking lot before the game for some tailgating.  One particular night we headed to the ball park ready to cheer on the Tigers only to pull up and realize the game was actually OUT OF TOWN!  How could I have been living in the same house with this child but not even realize this.  It’s times like that you just have to cut you losses and head somewhere that serves adult beverages and some chicken fingers or something.

I think we all have “those” days as a mom when we are definitely not bringing our A game.   Truth be told I definitely am off my game a lot!   I feel incredibly blessed to have 4 babies who give me a lot of grace.  They definitely love making fun of me for all the crazy things I do but they are so flexible and understanding when I goof or when scary mommy makes an entrance.

  1. These are all great, but I am laughing HYSTERICALLY at the last one. I would DIE if I found those on my phone. At least it was you and not someone else!

  4. My kiddos are still so little, but we've had our moments here and there. I tend to beat myself up and think I'm a failure, but I love how you can look back and laugh. I need to start relaxing a bit. We do all have those moments.

    1. We are all just doing the best we can the best way we know how Stacey…there is no perfect parenting out there it is all trial and error and I am telling you we can learn so much from those little stinkers about grace and forgiveness. They definitely are much better at giving me grace than I am at giving it to myself. Have a great weekend!
